The A9 Lions Charlie Shaw Youth
Camp was held at Riverstone
Retreat, Durham on July 18 - 25.
This was the 35th year for this camp.
Twenty youths ages 17 and 18 came
to Canada from 19 different
countries in Europe, Asia and South
America for four-week holiday.
Three weeks were with their host
families and one week was at camp.
At camp they were taken by bus
on day trips to Niagara Falls,
Toronto, Tobermory, Hanover
Races, Wingham (Wescast), Sauble
Beach, Owen Sound and Oakville to
see the Guide Dog School.
Thursday night was visitors night
at the camp with 150-plus people in
attendance. Ripley Lions provided a
roast beef dinner. Blyth Lions
provided dessert. A large cake with
all the guests’ names and countries
on it (made by Tasty Treats to Go orStay in Blyth) was served with icecream by first vice-president LionJohn Stewart and his wife Mary Lou,president Mark Nesbit, Bev Blair,Dietmar Schroecker and his wifeSophie, Brenda McDonald andfriend Linda Veir and Charlie Shaw.A $500 donation was also made to
the camp. Everyone was entertained
by the youth with skits and talks of
their home countries.
To finish the week a trip to the
drive-in theatre in Hanover was
made. This was a first for many of
the students.
Local host families were Dietmar
and Sophie Schroecker of Blyth,
Don and Kittie MacGregor,
Londesborough, Bill and Susanne
Robinson of Auburn and Jack and
Nancy Cameron of Lucknow.
Chantel Warwick is a Blyth
student who has gone to Australia
for a month. Reports are she is
having a good time.
The 8th Liners along with many
friends and neighbours both old and
new gathered at the new home of
Sharon and Bruce Bromley in Blyth
to surprise and help Myrtle and
Larry Badley celebrate their 45th
wedding anniversary. A potluck
supper was served and everyone
enjoyed the campfire and fireworks
at dark.
Over 40 Richmond relatives
gathered at the home of John and
Sheila Knox of Belgrave for their
annual picnic. Special guests were
Jessie France of Wingham and Verna
Lodge, daughter of Isabel
(Richmond) and Dave Patterson and

BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
There was no church service in
Blyth United Church on Aug. 2 so I
attended the service at Trinity
Anglican where Ella Ives conducted
the service.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Aug. 9 was Joan Clark.
Ushering were Cliff Snell and David
Onn.
The call to worship was followed
by the first hymn, Rejoice the Lordis King and the prayer of approach. The hymn, Like a Rock, was sung. The scripture reading was fromJohn 6: 35, 41-58. The choir sang ananthem, Yesterday, To-Day andTomorrow.Rev. Gary Clark’s message to theadults was Slow Down and Think.
People can see Jesus in the people
they know, such as when someone
helps out another person. Jesus
loved everyone and everyone should
do the same. The wine is asking for
forgiveness of sins and the sins of
others.
The next hymn, Give us Laughter
was followed by the offering being
received. The prayers of the
community and world and the
singing of The Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn was Be Thou My
Vision.
With new owners comes a name
change and long hours as the lights
of Blyth Variety are burning later
into the night.
Michael and Angela Oh, new
owners of Blyth Variety, moved to
Ontario three years ago after
their first son decided to attend
the University of Guelph and this
fall, their second son will be
attending the University of
Waterloo.
Originally from South Korea, the
Ohs came to Canada over 12 years
ago, settling in Vancouver, before
heading to Ontario, where they
bought a home.
As of Aug. 1, however, Michael
and Angela relocated once again,
moving to Blyth to live above their
newly-purchased Blyth Variety.
Their sons remain in the house in
Kitchener-Waterloo while Michael
and Angela live in Blyth. Once a
week, however, they plan to make a
trip back to Kitchener to do some
shopping and to visit their
children.
As for Blyth Variety, Oh says he
and his wife have discussed some
changes to the former Blyth General
Store, some that will take effect
immediately and others that will be
implemented over time.
Effective immediately is the
change in the name and extended
hours, which will see Blyth Variety
open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.
There are, however, some
renovations that Oh is hoping to
contract in the near future that will
change the look of the inside of the
store, giving it a more open
concept.
Oh says he likes Blyth a lot, not
even knowing about the Blyth
Festival when he first visited. He
said it was a pleasant surprise and
that he’s looking forward to
spending the rest of the theatre
season in Blyth.
