Well hello August! Holiday time is
going well and of course always too
quickly. Folks around us have used
the leisure time in various ways and
despite the weather, time spent at
cottages, campsites and
entertainment events have been
reported as all quite fun.
I’ve decided that it’s really the
people that you’re with and the
books that you have that make or
break the holiday.
Ralph and I, had an interestingtrek starting in Barrie and ending atour eastern destination – Jonquiere,Quebec. We’re lucky to have familyand friends strategically placedacross the land. Miss Ella is now oneyear old, getting sweeter by the visit. She has Julie and Curtis pretty wellunder control so we headed on tovisit brother Bob and Barb in
Bobcaygeon. For some of you that
went to Wingham and District High
School, this is Dorothy Comber’s
hometown. Her bicycle, ever present
dog and teaching home economics
have left many good memories in
our area.
It was too chilly for a boat ride so
it was on to Perth to see how Mike,
Val and Nathan Watson and Brody
TenPas were doing with fishing and
camping. There were lots of fish and
good weather so we headed to
Hallville to see brother Jim and Beth
for the weekend. All’s well there. The next stop was La Malbaie tosee Sheila Richards for a few days. Itwas nice having morning coffee witha good book watching the traffic onthe St. Lawrence.Last stop was to pick up AndrewWatson from French school inJonquiere with friends Lisa andMarina literally packed into the car
we headed for home. Good driving,
limited construction, great scenery,
good company got us back to Perth
after an 11-hour drive.
The next day to Brussels was
much shorter and easier.
Of course it’s good to be home.
There was a wedding in the
neighbourhood. A large white tent is
often the clue. Sharon Montgomery
and Greg Wilson, before a tent full
of family and friends, were wed on
Saturday evening. One of our usual,
frequent showers didn’t keep this
couple back as their children werewitnesses to this happy occasion.Congratulations Sharon and Greg.A mystery for us on Saturday wascleared by Sunday. A large pottedplant (that used to belong to BevBrown) was missing when we didthe home check. We had limitedpossibilities for the disappearance –it’s heavy, so where did it go?
A visit to the grocery store on
Sunday and meeting Carol, let me in
on the answer as well as the
decorating scheme for the
neighbourhood wedding. The tree
was already back in our yard by
then. Good work Deb, Laura and
Carol. It looks good and I’m sure it
enjoyed the second wedding in its
life. The pretty yellow blooms had
also travelled up the street when Deb
Trollope and Eric Ross were wed.
Aren’t mysteries fun?
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It has been another quiet week at
the Branch with just the normal
events happening.
Euchre was held on Saturday
afternoon with 11 tables at play. The
first-place team was John and
Catherine with 83 points. Two teams
Rita and Verna and Delores and
Dorothy Dalton were tied with 76
points, so shared the remaining prize
money. The low prize of the day
went to Bea Stoll and Betty Hulley.
The lucky lone hand prizes went to
Faye Albert and Ken Engel.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd enjoying the music of
the Country Versatiles. It was hot,
hot, hot outside but the air
conditioning was working top notch
and kept the 94 dancers nice and
cool.
President John Lowe attended the
fall council meeting on Tuesday
evening. He gave a progress report
on the Branch and heard the reports
on how other Branches are making
out. Declining membership is the
biggest issue in most Branches.
Elimination draw tickets are out
there. Make sure you get yours
before the early bird draw on Sept.
4. Tickets are available at Murray’s
Barbershop, the Branch and from
Legion members.
The community event calendar is
coming together nicely. The last
chance to get information on the
calendar for the year 2010 will be
Aug. 20. If you have an event
planned and want to be included,
call the Branch and leave a message
and we will get back to you.
The Legion membership is falling
and we need to have more folks
joining and getting involved in the
organization. The first priority of the
Legion is to perpetuate the
importance of Remembrance Day
and what it means to all of us, our
children and our children’s children.
The Legion provides support for
veterans, supports many youth
groups, teams, local hospitals,
Brussels Business group, Santa
Claus parade, Easter Seals and many
other groups that approach the
Branch for donations.
The Branch is working towards
making the Branch barrier free, so
we are keeping busy so we can reach
that goal.
