At their July 22 meeting, Morris-
Turnberry councillors accepted the
appraisals setting a value on the
assets of Wingham Area Fire
Board.
The average of the two appraisals
put the value of the assets at $1.5
million. However councillors agreed
they did not want to ask for any
specific assets from the dissolution
of the fire department until they get
a proposal from the new North
Huron fire department for the cost of
providing fire coverage to Morris-
Turnberry.
Nancy Michie, administrator
clerk-treasurer told council the
Wingham board had wanted to
have the valuation accepted and
the municipalities’ requests for
assets in time for the next board
meeting.
“We can’t make a decision about
the disposal of assets until we know
the (fire) costs,” said councillor
Mark Beaven.
Council passed a motion
accepting the valuation of assets but
declining a request to split those
assets until a cost estimate is
received.
Councillors agreed they had to
stand firm and insist that the cost of
the appraisals should be covered by
North Huron alone, as the partner
which had requested the disbanding
of the fire board.
The bills have been paid by the
fire board at this point, which means
Morris Turnberry would be
responsible for paying part of the
costs of the appraisers.
The original agreement said that
if a municipality requested
termination of the board, it would
pay the costs for getting two
valuations of the board’s asset.
Meanwhile councillors agreed to a
request from new North Huron fire
chief John Black to attend a future
meeting.
