In Walton’s half of the eighth, the international rule runner was thrown out at home on a double by McDonald, who then made it to third on the throw home. Marks took a base on balls and then stole second. Ron Strome also took a base on balls to load the bases. Unfortunately a ground ball hit ended the inning without scoring a run. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Brewers participated in the 38th annual Brussels Tigers Fastball Tournament on the weekend. They played against Arthur on Friday evening and came away with a 9-0 win. Their next game was against the Mitchell Chiefs which they lost 5-4 in extra innings. Their third game was won by forfeit when the team from Saugeen failed to arrive. St. Columban won the shoot-out by one goal giving them three points and Blyth earned two. Less than two hours later Blyth was set to play Seaforth I, just as the rain came down on the players and fans, making a very slippery field. With a previous loss and win against this team during the season, it was sure to be a very competitive game. Seaforth was first to get on the scoreboard planting the ball into the mesh, past Blyth’s keeper Bearss. It wasn’t long before Blyth’s Ben Nonkes sent the ball up to the field and Weber knocked the ball into the net to tie it. In the second half Seaforth was able to get past Blyth’s defence and scored. deBoer and J.P. VanDorp teamed together to penetrate Seaforth’s defence and scored. Seaforth slipped another goal in and Blyth was unable to get past Seaforth after they stepped up their defence to guard their lead. Seaforth earned a narrow 3-2 victory. With just one goal short this put the team in fifth place denying them a spot in the medal round. Blyth played with a lot of heart, skill and determination during this soccer tournament, and they should be very proud of that, said coaches. The luck of the draw was not with Blyth this tournament, but they were a team that could tie the gold and silver medal winners, St. Columban and Wingham. Blyth Thunder had a small but dedicated and talented team of players this year. Blyth’s goal keepers were Boven and Bearss. The defensive lineup was Dale, Zach Drost and Leendert VanDorp. Mid-fielders were Broda, Robbie Gordon, Damion Greidanus, Nonkes, Pizzati and Connor Wilts. Forwards were deBoer, J.P. VanDorp and Weber. “This team was a pleasure to coach and should be recognized for their great soccer skills, determination and good sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the season,” said coach Mary Ann Drost.
