Blyth U-14 Thunder boys soccer
team participated in the year-end
tournament July 23 - 25 in Brussels.
The boys were in an extremely
tough pool, but played three
excellent soccer matches at the
tournament.
The first game was against Clinton
Flash on Thursday, July 23. Earlier
in the season these two teams met
and Blyth lost 3-1, so this was sure
to be a challenging game.
Keeper Wyatt Bearss stood strong
in the net for Blyth taking a bite of
each ball that came at him, but he
was unable to stop three goals that
Clinton scored in the first half.
Derek deBoer and Jan Paul
VanDorp teamed up to score a goal
for Blyth before the whistle blew to
signal half-time.
Blyth came out and played a very
strong second half. The Thunder’s
defence cleared the ball and limited
the shots on net. Tyler Boven
blocked the rest of the shots and
didn’t let Clinton score. J.P.
VanDorp and deBoer teamed up
again and scored a goal to narrow
the gap. Mid-fielder Connor Wilts
booted the ball across the field
towards the net and Trystan Weber
sent the ball into the net for the
Thunder to tie it.
Fans and parents were on pins and
needles as the shoot-out began.
deBoer, J.P. VanDorp and Murray
Dale booted the ball into the net for
the team. Boven made two fantastic
saves and another shot went over the
net shutting down Clinton and
earning a win for Blyth.
This amazing comeback gave
Blyth two points for a tie and one
point for a shoot-out win.
On Saturday morning Blyth met
St. Columban. This was a very
competitive game with the score
going back and forth the entire
match.
St. Columban was first to score on
a handball penalty shot. Boven
made the first stop, but St.
Columban ran in and scored on the
rebound. J.P. VanDorp came back to
score a goal and tie it. deBoer
assisted.
St. Columban scored again to tie
it.
Blyth pulled ahead when Hunter
Broda took the corner kick. J.P.
VanDorp booted it toward the net
and Weber tapped the ball for a 3-2
lead at halftime.
In the second half St. Columban
scored two goals and J.P. VanDorp
scored for Blyth after a nice long
hard drive from mid field. Again the
game ended in a tie and a shoot-out
was required. This time all five
shooters were needed; deBoer and
Bearss drove the ball into the net.
Blyth and St. Columban both had
two misses, so it came down to the
last shooter for Blyth. Joel Pizzati
took an excellent shot and
unfortunately the ball hit the
crossbar ending the shootout. It was

It was a very eventful week at the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
Early Monday morning Bob
Gavreluk arrived at the club
offering his hard work and
experience to trim and weed around
the patio. It had been a job that had
needed to be done for some time
and now it looks great.
Bob Foxton has been busy in the
flowerbeds and a little cleaning up
sure does make the club a better
place to be.
Last Monday night the club held
an emergency general meeting. It
was fantastic to see a great turnout.
Around 100 members attended and
had some very positive ideas and
new hope for the future, thanks.
Tuesday night Trevor Hopf put on
a short game clinic for the Tuesday
night ladies and with the Wingham
Invitational just around the
corner Aug. 5 it was sure to be
helpful.
Wednesday morning senior men
had great weather and 20 golfers
came out to play in their weekly
tourney. Winners were: first, Jamie
Sanderson; second, Glen
McMichael and third, Brian Skinn.
The group also had a match play
championship started and the first
round scores have been real close
and have added some laughs and
gamesmanship.
Joining the Wednesday seniors
was Bruce Lott from Bracebridge.
It was great to see Bruce’s wife
Shirley and their host Hilda Brown
who joined Bruce for lunch at the
club (no truth that Hilda was
checking up on granddaughter Julie
Brown who is a busy girl working
at the clubhouse).
Bruce enjoyed the first nine so
much he joined the Johnston boys
on the back nine.
The Thursday night men, despite
the bad weather, showed their
loyalty to the club. Thirty-eight
golfers turned out.
The winners were longest putt
number nine, Dan McPherson;
closest to the pin number two,
Trevor Hopf; hidden scores, 40,
Jake Goodall; 48, Vern Logan and
54, Lloyd Erb; low gross, 34, John
Dailleboust.
There was a four-way tie for
second at 38, among Mugger, Don
Edgar, Steve Nixon and Doug
Petteplace.
Saturday, July 25 the club hosted
the 12th annual Potty Cup. This
tournament is the ‘open’ for the
Wingham club.
The 67 golfers are the definition
of what golf is all about,
organization, competitive spirit and
friendship beyond compare (Potty
flies home from Calgary for this
day) the guys get together and
simply enjoy a game and each
others’ company.
The winners were Gerald Skinn,
Roger Irvin, Greg Storey and Terry
Anger. Team captain Gerald was so
happy, he had the customary
winner’s drink from the cup and
planted a kiss on Potty.
Closest to the pin winners were
number two Larry Hayes, number
five Tom Chester and number seven
Doug Neil.
Halfway through the day Mother
Nature caused a brief stoppage in
play and it was sure great to have
volunteers Lorne Millen and Jayne
Skinn helping serve food and
keeping the golfers dry and content.
Special thanks to tournament
organizer Doug Petteplace and
celebrity Potty.
Good to see George Skinn and
Art DeVos out of hospital and doing
well. Hope to see you soon at the
course.
