At its July 21 meeting, Huron East
council accepted two tenders. The
first was from Lavis Contracting
Ltd. for the repaving of Cranbrook
Road and McNabb Line and bridge
deck repairs along that line. The
tender came in at $891,329.25,
nearly $200,000 less than the next
lowest bid.
The second tender approved was
from MSO Construction Ltd. for
rural surface treatment of Morrison
Line and Beechwood Line at a cost
of $207,734.10.
Both projects came in
significantly under budget. The
Cranbrook Road/McNabb Line
project was originally budgeted for
$1.4 million, coming in over
$500,000 under budget and the
Morrison Line/Beechwood Line
project came in just under $100,000
under budget for over $600,000 in
theoretical savings to the
municipality.

Chief building official Paul
Josling issued 18 building permits
on behalf of the municipality in June
with a value of over $700,000.
June’s totals bring the year’s
permits up to 62, with a total value
of $4,698,600.
At the end of June 2008, 92
permits had been issued for a total
value of $13,081,900.
***
Council approved a request from
the Winthrop Warrior fastball team
regarding the rental of the Winthrop
diamond for their year-end
tournament from Sept. 10-12.
In addition to the request to
license the event, the team also
asked if games could be held at the
Walton diamond. There would be
three games held at the diamond,
Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 11 at
6:30 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 8 a.m.
***
Council approved the placement
of a banner across Hwy. 8 to
promote this year’s Walton
TransCan event. The banner will
hang from Aug. 12 to Aug. 16.
Celebrations in Brussels again. On
Saturday night Pat and George
Langlois played host to family and
friends at the Community Centre as
they celebrated love and life. Stories,
pictures, laughs, food and music
made for a fun night as the years
were celebrated – fifty and more
make for a lot of memories.
George and Pat have made many
friends since hitting Brussels years
ago. This party was a good
opportunity for us to say thanks for
all the help they’ve offered over the
years as well as to let them know
that they are appreciated for just
being themselves.
So happy anniversary, Pat and
George, and may life continue to
give you many more good memories
that we’d love to share.
Soccer and ball games were
readily available on the weekend,
often as the wee drops kept dripping,
but the play continued. Walton and
Brussels came out the best in the
men’s play, but all the teams played
well.
Friday evening’s games opened
with a tribute to Wayne Lowe who
for years was a supporter and willing
worker for this event. Nephew John
Lowe got this year’s games
underway with a tribute to Wayne, a
good example of a community
booster.
Church in the conservation park
was well attended on Sunday. People
brought their lawn chairs and lunch
and enjoyed the outdoor worship. A
community choir has been practising
under the guidance of Glenda
Morrison for weeks, and offered
their gifts of music. Children who
attended Kid’s Corner last week
offered some of the songs they had
learned, bringing their musical view
to the service.
Holiday time continues, trips to
the lake (on the good days), time at
the zoo and museums, camping trips
and music festivals have all been
planned for the next few weeks. Take
advantage of all the good things that
are available to us and enjoy the
summer time.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a busy weekend for the
Brussels Legion Branch with the
food booth at the Tigers fastball
tournament. A great job was done by
set-up crew Greg Wilson, Rick
McDonald, John Lowe and Lisa
Glanville to get everything ready.
Jo-Ann McDonald assembled the
stock needed and it didn’t take long
to have it all organized.
During the weekend, about 20
comrades covered the 36 hours the
booth was operating, so a few more
bodies would have been nice. The
cleanup crew also worked quickly
and a good job was done by John,
Mike Dauphin, Deb Cann, Judy Lee
and Jo-Ann.
There were 15 tables of euchre
players on hand Saturday. Top
players for the day were Willis and
Betty with 77 points, John and Iola
Subject with 76 points and Helen
Dobson and Mabel Willis with 72
points.
The low prize of the day went to
Rita and Verna with 46 points. Lone
hand prizes went to Lloyd Appleby
and Alma.
