HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-07-23, Page 2By Jo-Ann McDonald It was a quiet week but a busy weekend at the Brussels Legion Branch. The crew was off to the Seaforth agricultural hall to serve up fish and fries for around 140. It was a smaller than normal fry because of the Mayhem Madness in Seaforth on Friday night. Working on behalf of the Brussels Legion were Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald, Jason and LeeAnn Konarski, Kelly McDonald, Adam Jarosz and Lisa Glanville. The next night the crew was off to Hensall Legion to serve their sold- out crowd of 100. This time Comrades Jim and Cris Brown, Sandra Josling and Glenn Bridge were the folks doing the job. Saturday was the celebration of Comrade Mel and Lois McArter’s 50th wedding anniversary. A lovely open house saw many friends, neighbours and relatives dropping by to congratulate the happy couple. Around 70 family members and close friends joined the couple and their family for a meal. Mel and Lois have three sons, Doug, Kevin and Brian. The boys along with their families were all in attendance for the wonderful day. Congratulations to Mel and Lois. This weekend is the Tigers fastball tournament. The Branch is doing the food booth so Comrades drop by and lend a hand if you can. Call the Branch and see if there are any time slots still needing help. Elimination draw tickets are available at the Branch and Comrades are asked to stop in nd get a book to sell. PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2009. Owen Maynard – is that a name that rings a bell? Probably not. This week would not be as important if Owen had not followed his dream. It’s another of those situations where the glory of the moment goes to a few and the life work of some goes almost unnoticed. As we view the pictures of 40 years ago this week when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin steppedonto the surface of the moon, theywere there with a lot of help fromtheir friends. They’d still be walkingif Michael Collins hadn’t done hisbest work keeping Apollo 11 in thecorrect spot so they could reconnectand get back on board. WithoutOwen Maynard’s engineering skills,(he was from Sarnia) and a sketch of a spider-like thing that became the lunar module that detached from the main command ship, they just wouldn’t have got to the moon. Aluminum legs by a company in Quebec, Heroux-Devtek, were also an important detail. Over 20 Canadian engineers were hired by NASA after the Avro plant in Malton was closed, making the contributions of Canadians to the total space projects really quite important. So don’t forget that the quiet oneslike Owen Maynard and MichaelCollins and many others were just asimportant as the ones who made theheadlines July 20, 1969.Well-known American televisionreporter and anchor Walter Cronkitedied last week. He was the face thatheralded the birth of television in theStates and a familiar face in the early days of TV when the stations were limited in number. His delivery of news was respected at a time when many officials were not. He was our Knowlton Nash and Lloyd Robertson. Mel and Lois (Goll) McArter took a look at years gone by on Saturday as they welcomed friends and family to celebrate the 50 years of their marriage. Sons Doug, Kevin and Brian and their families helped host anafternoon of laughter and memoriesat the Legion, much to the delight ofMel and Lois.Village folk and visitors areenjoying all the fun times that onlysummer can offer – beach days, shopping tours, idle time, theatrechoices, camping trips and sports. We had three busy granddaughters here last week, so life as we know it was gone, replaced by walks to the park, stories, water play, baking, lots of giggling and just busy fun. Thanks Jordan, Robyn and Jill. Next week, pop over to the conservation area with your lawn chair on Sunday morning for 11 a.m. The Brussels Ministerial is hosting the outdoor service and potluck lunch, so if you’re home, join the worship. Harold Bell, who resides just north of Wroxeter, was riding a tractor on one of his farms, according to his son-in- law Ken Warwick, when the tractor rolled down an embank- ment. Bell was taken to the trauma unit in London with a punctured lung, broken and dislocated shoulder as well as a number of less serious injuries, said Warwick. As of press, Bell was still a patient in critical care.
