Some elements of the
reconstruction of Helena Street in
Lower Town Wingham may have to
be cut back after tender came in
much higher that the original
estimate.
The tender of Hanna and
Hamilton Construction was
accepted at a cost of $800,516 plus
GST, $20,000 higher than Gamsby
and Mannerow Engineers had
estimated when tenders were called
for. But the bid is $141,500 higher
than the preliminary estimate by the
engineer that was used to apply for
the Build Canada Fund grant last
November.
The federal and provincial
governments will pick up one-third
each of that original $743,700
application amount, leaving the
municipality to pick up one third of
that total, plus the entire amount of
the overrun.
Council accepted the tender but
will look for ways to reduce the total
cost.
In other road business, Mike
Thomas, director of public works,
said he expected tar and chip paving
of Brandon Road and Glenannon
Road would be completed the week
of July 13-17.
Construction on Salem Road is
also expected to commence the
same week.
