County council approved road
construction tenders at its July 8
meeting.
The first included a shared project
with Perth County for County Road
14, as well as work on County Road
19, with funding from the upper tier.
The public works department
applied for funding for the projects
through the Infrastructure
Sustainability Fund and in June
received word that they were eligible
to receive money.
Mike Alcock, civil engineering
technologist, presented the
recommendation to council. He
explained that eight contractors
picked up tender documents and two
submitted forms in time for the July
7 deadline.
Alcock recommended the tender
of Lavis Contracting Co. Ltd. in the
amount of $2,644,096.45, plus GST.
The projects were to be funded
from the highways reserve with
Perth County paying its share in
2010.
Prior to tendering it was estimated
that a maximum of $1,800,000
would be required to fund the
projects. Huron will need
$1,347,560.27 for the work with
$699,292.18 being repaid by Perth
in 2010.
Alcock broke down the payments
per road and per county. For County
Road 14, Huron’s share would be
$233,097.39, while County Road 19
would require $415,170.70 for a
total of $648,268.09.
The grant money is divided as
$466,194.78 for County Road 14
and $830,341.40 for County Road
19.
The total value of the projects is
$2,644,096.45.
Asked by council if Perth
shouldn’t be involved in the signing
of the agreement, Alcock said they
have signed a paper committing up
to $900,000 towards the work.
“They didn’t seem interested in
being present for tendering. I think
they’re just happy to be paying
$699,000 for a million dollar
project.”
While the payment is to be made
in 2010, there will be no interest
charged, provided it’s paid by March
31.
Council also approved a
recommendation to accept the tender
from Lavis in the amount of
$836,769.25 for work on County
Road 10 through Crediton.
