HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-07-09, Page 27After 76 years as a service group, Morning Star Rebekah Lodge (whose motto is Friendship, Love and Truth), gathered together for a final time on Tuesday, June 30 in the basement of Melville Presbyterian Church. A potluck dinner was enjoyed by 21 members, two guests and one former member. Marie McTaggart, who joined the Rebekahs in 1943 and has been a member for 66 years, was a special guest, accompanied by her daughter, Ruth Lowe. Mary Davidson, Edna Pearson and Sarah Stephenson all have over 50 years as a member. Barbara Watts, joined Morning Star in 1969 and transferred to Collingwood Lodge when they moved. Linda Jacklin of Goderich was initiated in 1970 and attended with a friend. Several unable to attend were Leona Connelly, Delores Wheeler, Helen Bray, Leola Hood, Barb andRoss Nichol all of Brussels, GeorgeInglis of Belgrave, and LeolaHarrison and Lillian Moses fromListowel and the last member to joinin 2003 and Carrol Fowler ofWindsor.Many photo albums, history of celebrations and other memorabilia were set out for all to browse through. Several members remembered and shared some of the humorous happenings over the years. Members said the occasion was bittersweet, but inevitable. They will miss getting together as it’s the only time many see each other, they noted. While the event may have been a solemn one, there were smiles all around as life-long friends met, socialized and distributed some of the Lodge’s history amongst some of the members. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Era ends as Morning Star closes after 76 years Memorial Dozens of residents gathered in Belgrave over the weekend for the Brandon Cemetery memorial service. The service, which was conducted by deacon Sanda Clark, who is based at St. John’s Anglican Church in Brussels as part of the Parish of New Beginnings, took place in the middle of the cemetery, under the shade of the surrounding trees.
