PAGE 26. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 9, 2009.
I came across this item from The
Blyth Standard dated March 31,
1965 that I thought you might enjoy.
“Thursday of this week will mark
an event which will bring the Blyth
Municipal Telephone System to a
position where it is as modern as any
on the North American Continent.
April 1, this Thursday is the day
when direct distance dialing will
commence operation in Blyth.
In effect, this means that all
patrons of the local system will find
it possible to dial any telephone
number in Canada and the United
States directly from their own
homes.
A pamphlet listing instructions on
how to direct dial has been sent to
every subscriber on the local system.
We would advise reading it carefully
before taking advantage of the new
service. In any event, you must dial
the number “one” before placing a
long distance call. Local calls will be
carried out as usual.
Operators will still be needed to
carry out a vital role in the phone
conversation. Immediately after you
dial, an operator will come on the
line to ask for your telephone
number. Give her the number of your
own phone, not the one you are
dialing.”
Today’s media is constantly
reminding us not to use our phones
while driving. If one can call those
tiny wireless handheld devices a
telephone. Not only can you call
anyone in Canada and the United
States and elsewhere on them one
can send messages, search the web,
listen to music, watch a movie and
take a photo.
And when was the last time you
spoke to an operator?
And all this in 44 years more or
less.
Also in this edition of The Blyth
Standard was an item about the
possibility of artificial ice at the
Blyth arena at an estimated cost of
$25,000.
Irene Bromley is currently nursing
a sore shoulder as a result of surgery.
She will be off work for a couple of
months. Why not share some time
with her by phone or a visit.
Londesborough United hosts baptismsRelatives and friends of threeyoung children have been part of thecongregations at LondesboroughUnited Church the past two Sundays. They have wanted to be present forbaptisms, the important first step inthe faith journey of these children.
Becoming a child of God’s covenant
of love were Isabella Evelyn
Bernice, daughter of Richard and
Julie Moore, Boden Timothy John,
son of Tim and Angela Lyons and
Anneka Ruth, daughter of Boris and
Heather Decker.
Assisting Rev. Pat Cook with the
sacrament of baptism were Carmen
Drost on behalf of the official board
and Joan Goodall representing the
UCW. Joan presented each mother
with a candle signifying a new light
in the faith community.
Rev. Cook read three scriptures
during the baptism services,
passages from Genesis, Corinthians
and Matthew.
On Sunday, June 28, the senior
choir sang a familiar anthem, It is
Well with My Soul.
Psalm 23 was the morning’s
responsive psalm. The gospelreading, Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56,illustrates that Jesus was leading avery busy life teaching andpreaching. Moreover, people werecoming great distances to hear andsee Him. Jesus was always patient
and understanding, something He
was an example of for His disciples.
That Sunday, Rev. Cook’s
message was titled, The 4 Rs of the
Sabbath. People didn’t quite
understand why they were drawn to
Jesus; they were finding a spiritual
home in His teachings. On the
particular occasion from Mark, both
Jesus and His disciples needed a rest
but found 5,000 persons waiting for
them. This was the occasion of the
feeding with the loaves and fishes;
they put the needs of others ahead of
their own.
The congregation was asked, “Do
we do the same? Do we trust God to
help us serve others?”
Like Jesus and the disciples,
people today need a time or day of
rest, a Sabbath. That day holds the
keys to the 4 Rs, said Rev. Pat.
Remember to make the day specialthrough worship. Relate to others inthe community through attending aworship service. Find rest in apleasurable, relaxing way to spendthe day. Find renewal in plans for theupcoming week, etc.
On Sunday, July 5, Rev. Cook
began her summer series of
messages on The Lord’s Prayer.
Supporting text was from
Luke 11: 1-13, a passage when
Jesus talked to the disciples about
prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer for
the welfare of community as a
whole; there is no my or me
in the prayer. Christianity is a
faith community. The our of the prayer is a broadterm for God has a family offollowers. Most Christians becamefollowers through the faith andcommitment of family. There will be a service Sunday,
July 12. Then Londesborough
United will take three weeks of
holidays, July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
Londesborough United will
hold a fun golf day on July 11.
Golfing will take place at Bill Lobb’s
farm. Post golf activities and
dinner will happen at the
Horbanuik home.

Horbanuik or Bev. Riley.
