celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary last weekend at Duff’s
United Church in Walton, featuring
a full complement of family and
friends.
Marion Hemingway, daughter of
Carl and Eleanor Hemingway of
RR3 Brussels and Lavern Godkin,
son of Olive and Edmund Godkin of
RR2 Walton were married on July 4,
1959 at the Brussels United Church.
The ceremony was presided over
by Rev. Lloyd Brown. Bridesmaids
were Audrey Godkin (Beuermann)
and Merle Godkin (Burns), while the
maid of honour was Ruth
Hemingway (Axtmann). Ushers
were Murray Dennis and Don
Hemingway and the best man was
Mervin Godkin. The flowergirl was
Laurel Hemingway (East).
After the ceremony, the
newlyweds took a 10-day road trip
through northern Ontario, where
they went through Huntsville,
Algonquin Park, North Bay,
Sudbury and the Georgian Bay
area.
Upon returning, the Godkins
settled down at their new residence
at RR1 Walton. Lavern began work
as a farmer as well as an insurance
director, while Marion helped out
with the farming while continuing
her career as a teacher.
They retired from farming in
2006.
They had seven children: Dianne,
Bruce (married to Katrin), Ron
(married to Lynne), Gary (married to
Geri-Lee), Donna (married to
Cameron Blair), Nancy (married to
Richard Schmeltzer) and Sharon
(married to Michael Paterson).
The Godkins have 14
grandchildren: Scott, Brent, Laura,
Heather, Mitchell, Lucas, Kara,
Kelly, Reagan, Jacob, Kristi, Cailin,
Brooke and Cole.
Over the years, the Godkins have
been very active with bowling,
gardening, crafts and sewing as
hobbies. They are members of the
United Church community. Marion
is also a member of the Walton
Women’s Institute.
For the anniversary celebration, all
of their children and grandchildren
were present at Duff’s United
Church. Guests travelled from as far
as Florida, Nova Scotia, Wawa,
Toronto, Newmarket, Windsor,
London, Waterloo, Cookstown and
Rockwood, as well as from around
Huron County.
The celebration included an open
house and dinner. Entertainment
during the dinner included a slide
show, which highlighted Christmas
card pictures, which had been taken
every year since 1959. In addition to
the slide show, some of their
grandchildren performed by
dancing, singing and some skits.
There was also an address from
Marion’s maid of honour.
