Hebo and Margaret Siertsema
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary last weekend at
Westfield Hall with dozens of
friends and family members.
Margaret Ann, daughter of
William and Hazel Dalrymple of
RR3 Blyth and Hebo Siertsema, son
of Albert and Jacobmina Siertsema
of Blyth were married on July 4,
1959 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian
Church in Blyth.
The service was presided over by
Rev. D.J. Lane and attendants were
Shirley Wood (Patterson), Jean
Horton (Rathwell), Betty Baker
(Siertsema), Murray Siertsema, John
Siertsema and Alan Dalrymple, who
is since deceased.
After the wedding, before the
Siertsemas settled down at their
home in RR3 Blyth, they headed to
Alberta for the Calgary Stampede
for their honeymoon. On the trip
back, they travelled through the U.S.
Hebo began farming and driving a
milk truck, while Margaret was a
nurse at Wingham hospital.
Margaret is now semi-retired from
nursing, a decision she made in
2001.
The pair had four children: Jean
Bennett, Alan Siertsema, Ken
Siertsema and Bruce Siertsema.
They also have 11 grandchildren.
Over the years the Siertsemas
have occupied their time by going
camping, hunting and travelling.
Margaret is a member of the
Majestic Women’s Institute in
Auburn and she drives on a
volunteer basis for Town and
Country.
Guests at the anniversary
celebration travelled from as far as
Winnipeg, Ohio, Michigan,
Beaverton, Walkerton, London and
Bayfield.
At the celebration, members of the
family were all home and had a
picture taken while the
grandchildren made stepping stones
and an arch for the celebration.

of rejecting him. “If you ever forget
the Lord your God and follow other
gods and worship and bow down to
them, I testify against you today that
you will surely be destroyed. Like
the nations before you, so you will
be destroyed for not obeying the
Lord your God.” (Verses 19-20).
Our personal responsibility is to
understand our times and obey
God in the midst of our times.
Even though our culture says
one thing, it takes a tremendous
amount of energy to go in another
direction.
Do we pay a price to have that
privilege? Yes. Is it worth it?
Absolutely!
Friends, we have to be aware of
the culture we are living in. If God
is important to us, then we have to
wrestle with how we can honour
him. The education of our children
is very important.
Can a Christian thrive in an
institution that wants to be godless?
Yes! On the other hand, it is also true
that students lose their faith while
receiving their education in
institutions where God is not
honoured.
What is our responsibility
collectively? II Chronicles 7:14 says
God gives us the way back to him.
“If my people, who are called by my
name, will humble themselves and
pray and seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then will I hear
from heaven and will forgive their
sins, and will heal their land.”
I yearn for the day that God of the
Bible will be acknowledged as the
Creator and as Almighty God. The
example Abraham Lincoln gave us
of a proclamation during the Civil
War in the U.S.A. is amazing that
showed a respect for God and a
dependence on him.
What would Canadians do if the
Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen
Harper, issued such a proclamation
today? I hope I am wrong, but I
could see a talk show host tearing
him apart and calling him old
fashioned, and the public paying no
heed to the proclamation.
The universe is established with
God in control and he establishes
those in authority that he chooses.
We cannot get rid of God and when
we reject him, we suffer the
consequences. God’s grace flows
when there is repentance.
