Kathryn: Joel will be the next Kung
Fu Panda!
Sadie: Sarah is someone you would
want to tell a joke to … ‘cause her
laugh is the best.
Kathryn: Lauren is the one you can
always depend on to be your crying
shoulder.
Sadie: Kennan perseveres; he never
gives up on tasks no matter how hard
they are.
Kathryn: Lucas has the answers to
everything.
Sadie: Ronnie is funny …
Kathryn: and caring Clara is one of
the sweetest people you could ever
meet.
Sadie: Tyler is full of energy and
has an obsession with bananas.
Kathryn: Atwood is the book
worm, he knows just about everything
about every animal.
Sadie: Jessie has a very open mind.
She is willing to take a chance at any
situation.
Sadie: and Becca is a leader and
someone you can always depend on.
Kathryn: Sadie is my best friend
because she is who she is.
Sadie: Kathryn’s my best friend; I
don’t know what I’d do without her.
Sadie: Can you imagine how fast
our lives are going to go by? Like it
feels like yesterday we were eating
sand.
Kathryn: That was yesterday!
Sadie: Okay well you obviously
don’t get my point. I mean it feels like
yesterday we were starting our first
day of kindergarten.
Kathryn: oh ya. Hey if you could
tell our class something what would it
be?
Sadie: Wow – without getting too
mushy and gushy, I’d just let them
know how much I’ve enjoyed grow-
ing up with them. They are all unique
individuals who I’ll never forget. I am
proud of the fact that I can call each
one of them my friend.
Kathryn: Is that it?
Sadie: No, I would also tell them to
stay true to themselves, enjoy being
who they are and reach for all that
they can be.
Kathryn: I’m going to miss our
class.
Sadie: I know … lots of you are
going to different high schools, but
that’s what’s so great about living in a
small town – we’ll still see each other
– plus there’s always Facebook or
MSN. Oh, I thought of something
else I’d tell my class.
Kathryn: What’s that?
Sadie: My favourite quote from Dr.
Seuss. “Don’t cry because it’s over.
Smile because it happened.”
Kathryn: What we have learned at
BPS will be cherished and used as
stepping stones to our future. Please
join Sadie and I in congratulating
graduating class of 2009.
Sadie: We did it, we’re the best.
Valedictorians highlight students’ character traits
Brussels continued
women instead of children and when
we treat our classmates with kindness,
co-operation and genuine respect, we
are greeted with the same in return.
Thank you Mrs. Hall for sharing
this very important message with us.
Like Bill Gates suggests, “Be nice to
a nerd, he’ll be your boss someday.”
Lesson 5: Don’t be afraid to be
yourself, because we are all unique.
Each one of us has our dreams. We
are born with a special gift, just wait-
ing for us to find.
We are all superstars when we
express ourselves and show our true
colours. We must welcome our
dreams, nurture them, letting them
grow within us, allowing them to
form and gently shape our lives.
Don’t allow yourself to be pushed
into a career or position just because
“your parents did it” or because
someone thinks you should. Explore
your skills and never hold back, the
world is at your fingertips, so go
ahead, and discover.
Lessons 6: Create a bucket list.
We can never be too busy, to really
stop and enjoy life. Simple pleasures
such as a glance into a forest or the
smile on a baby’s face disappear in
the blink of an eye if we don’t take
the time to recognize them. Let’s not
forget, that it isn’t our status or wealth
that define us; but it’s the ability we
have to balance work and play.
We need to refrain from saying
things like, “I don’t have time to” or
“I’ll do it later” because there may
never be another chance.
Breathe life, excitement and pure
enjoyment, living each day as if it
could be your last. Say the things that
are important, do the things that mat-
ter and be grateful for the simple
pleasures.
Lesson 7: Remember you’re never
too cool to care
We are at the top of our game, the
prime of our lives and the “top
dawgz”of Brussels Public School.
Very suddenly, it’s all too easy to dis-
regard others’ needs while we go
ahead and focus on ourselves. Just as
we are beginning to spread our wings
in the world we must remember to
give back to our school, our commu-
nity and our global communities.
I know right now looking at our
class that we can make a difference!
We have the strength, the potential
and the drive to truly make our mark
on the world. Whether it’s a simple
smile to a stranger or helping some-
one with their groceries, we need to
remember it is our duty to care. We’re
not just kids anymore, we can’t go
flying through the doors, budging
into lines or yelling down the hall-
ways. Instead, we need to realize that
it is our time to put down the cool
shades and hold out a helping
hand.
In conclusion, we need to remem-
ber that we all have choices that will
stay with us for the rest of our lives.
We realize that we can be who every-
one expects us to be, or we can be the
person we need to be. We could spend
our lives in the shadows, being like
everyone else and trying to just “fit
in”. We could just go with the flow, or
we could leave this room tonight
promising to learn from our mistakes,
to honour our families and our
dreams, to treat everyone with respect
to truly love life and enjoy every
minute that we are blessed with.
Please my friends, leave here
tonight knowing that we are embark-
ing on a new beginning, with a new
vision, and a new purpose. Take the
lessons that we have learned, and
make your mark, leave a legacy and
change the world!
Like Dr. Seuss used to say, “You
have brains in your head. You have
feet in your shoes. You can steer your-
self, any direction you choose!”
