From the day
many of us entered
Grey as frightened
little
kindergartners
clinging to our
parents’ arms – we
have changed.
Things have
happened to us. We
are taller; some of us anyway; we are
wiser and we have experienced
more.
Maybe we have felt happiness,
maybe we have felt pain. We have
met new friends, and we have drifted
apart from old ones. We’ve won
games; we’ve lost games. We’ve
broken bones.
We’ve spent countless hours of our
lives on the field in the sun. We've
crossed the line and we've been
hauled back over it with our tails
between our legs. We have laughed,
we have cried, we have hurt and we
have healed.
We have entered this place for the
first time and we will leave it for the
last time and we will be different.
We will have changed.
Ten years ago getting the purple
crayon or having a turn at the water
table would have made our day.
Naptime and figuring out what
flavour the playdough was were also
highlights of the day.
We thought that kindergarten was
the greatest thing ever. Our teachers
warned us that Grade 1 wouldn’t be
all fun and games like we were used
to. But they were wrong. Mr. Park
and Miss Hill made fun in
everything they did. From singing
the date and storytime to banjo
playing, we had a blast.
Grade 2 was a fun repeat for some
of us with Mr. Park. Learning more
crazy songs and stories and lots
about nature we actually thought that
school was fun.
Even science was fun because we
had aquariums filled with fish and
snails and every insect imaginable to
study.
In Grade 3 we were all together
with Mrs. Taylor. We spent many
hours sitting on the carpet in front of
her rocking chair listening to slightly
more sane stories then we had heard
in Grade 1 and 2.
Grade 4 came along and Mrs.
Murray and many music classes with
it. After a few months she decided
she had enough of us and had a baby.
So we ended up with lots of supply
teachers until Mr. Ford arrived. With
him came many extra gym classes
and lots of fun!
We also started French with Mrs.
C. that year.
In Grade 5 Mr. Bartlett turned our
manners right side up. “Can I” didn’t
quite fly with him and at the start
none of us were sure why we
weren’t allowed to go to the
bathroom! His response would be “I
don’t know, can you?”
Grade 6 we had Miss Aarssen and
plenty of fun. We had the ‘O show in
Tokyo’ and lots of Japanese lessons.
The sight of Mervin and Anthony
in Miss Aarssen’s high heels was a
funny thing that we will all
remember. We also had our first ever
student teacher with us, Mrs.
McCracken.
Grade 7 brought a new teacher for
us and the school, Mr. Hernden. I
will always remember the look on all
of our faces when we saw him walk
into the gym the first day of Grade 7.
We were all expecting some old
grumpy teacher that yells all the time
but, we were wrong.
Mr. Hernden was the kind of
teacher that actually tried to
understand us and didn’t yell when
we were being loud or something,
just sat there and stared us down
until we stopped. His many attempts
to convince the school to upgrade in
the technology area are much
appreciated and still on going.
Grade 8 brought us Mrs. G. and
learning about ultrasounds. Mrs. G.
spent lots of money on us for special
art projects like the plaster masks.
All of us girls were terrified that
we would lose our eyebrows to the
plaster right before grad so we
covered ourselves in vaseline. Very
gross. I don’t think that anyone lost
them so the vaseline must have
worked.
Another was our clay and
plasticine sculptures, which were
slightly messy but also lots of fun.
Camp Celtic was a fun memory
for all that ended up going. With the
“oh so scary” rope courses, the rock
climbing walls, the terribly scary
bears and the bad manners
punishments, some people were very
humiliated.
Herman very nicely put up with us
and organized this trip for us. Grade
8 overall has been a very exciting
and full year that we won’t ever
forget.
I want to say thank you to my
classmates for choosing me to share
all of our memories from Grey with
you. Also all of our principals, Mr.
and Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Cochrane and
all the other staff. We don’t change
because of ourselves it’s the people
and moments in life that change us.
We will walk out of this room and
in our separate directions of the
world. We will grow and we will
change and the memories and details
of Grey will slowly blend into one,
but no matter who we become; no
matter what happens to us or what
we see or do in our lives, this exact
moment, right now, will remain in
every one of us.
It will be a part of us, and it will be
behind us, and although some of us
may walk out of this room and never
speak again, this day, this
auditorium, this second is something
we will always share. There are
moments in life that connect us.
Graduates of 2009, this is our
moment.
A lot of changes have come to students over the years
