I would like to share some lessons I have learned during my time at Brussels Public School. I hope they will give you strength when facing difficult decisions, help you understand that if you keep trudging on there is a light at every tunnel and that each one of us is special in our own amazing way. Lesson 1: Try to make the right choices; but when you don’t, learn from your mistakes. Try as hard as you can in everything you do, but if you fail, learn from your mistakes and keep on trying. We are given the materials needed to succeed, but we must assemble them in the correct fashion, making the right choices along the way. Nonetheless, a mistake is only a mistake if you never learn from it. Lesson 2: Family comes first We also must stop to think of the ones who have guided us to where we are now, our parents and teachers. They have been there for us, gently leading us on the pathway of success. It really is overwhelmingto stop, and think of all the thingsthey have done for us. We are who we are because of the lessons and morals they instill in us. They have always been there for us and for that we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Lesson 3: Always listen to your heart. If you know it’s wrong then don’t do it. We all know that as we enter high school we will be faced with some difficult decisions relating to drinking, drugs and sexual activities. We must stand strong and remember that we have every right to stand up for what we believe in. We are teenagers, known for being careless and jumping into opportunities. But one wrong decision, or one innocent joy ride, can throw away years of hard work. It can land you in jail, or worse yet: cut your life short. We have worked hard to get this far, let’s be sure that we don’t ruin it with the wrong decision, the wrong friends or the wrong situation. Always listen to your heart, it won’t steer you wrong. Lesson 4: Treat everyone equally. Throughout our lives our parents and teachers have enforced the Golden Rule, suggesting that we treat others the way we wish to be treated. We learned this lesson well in kindergarten when Mrs. Hallexplained to us that if we spreadwarm fuzzies to our neighbours, then the cold pricklies would stay far away.Eight years later, we can’t agreemore. Throughout our public school career we have learned that you really do get what you give. Whenwe show respect to our teachers, weare treated like young men andGrade 8 graduates reminded of life’s lessons On to Grade 9 - Brussels Public School’s Grade 8 graduation class is, back row, from left: Kody Higgins, Adam Cousins and Courtney Bloemberg.
