The young players work hard at improving their skills and parents and grandparents love to hear about it. As well, the kids like to see their names in print. Submissions of reports or scoresheets would be appreciated, to help us keep our readers up to date on how local teams are doing this summer. The Brussels U-12s played in the Lucknow’s Strawberry Summerfest tournament. Brussels went up against Wingham on the Thursday night. Brussels had an early lead with two goals. Scoring were Carl Dow, assisted by Laura Souch and Patrick Franken. In the second half Wingham scored two on Eric VanNes. Dow put in another, assisted by Cody Rathwell. Wingham tied it up but with a minute left, Dalen Martin tapped one in to win the game. In the second game, they played Blyth. Goals were by Devin Bachert and Dow. Goalies were Wyatt Ducharme and Van Nes. The third game was against Goderich. Netminders played great. Ducharme scored four assisted by Bachert. Stephanie Hummell, Kailey Wheeler, Kieran Jarad, Lexi Smith, Delayna Smith and Carl Daw each got one with help by Heidi Bachert, Laura Souch, Luke McCutcheon and Cody Harding. Brussels was one point away from moving on to the finals. Thunder zaps opponents The Blyth Thunder U-14 boys soccer squad travelled to Wingham on June 25 for a very hot and humid evening of soccer. The weather zapped some of the players’ regular game energy so Blyth had a slow first half. Wingham played strong though and scored three goals, the first on a corner kick, the second on a breakaway and the third on a rebound shot after Blyth keeper Tyler Boven made an awesome save. Blyth finally found a dent in the Wingham defensive zone when brothers Leendert and JanPaul VanDorp teamed up to score a goal before the half-time whistle blew. In the second half, Murray Dale shot the ball to J.P. VanDorp for a goal for Blyth to narrow the gap in the score. Wingham made some shots on net but Blyth’s keeper Hunter Broda didn’t let the ball get past him. With minutes left in the game J.P. VanDorp made a nice shot on Wingham’s net, but the keeper stopped the shot. Trystan Weber ran in for the loose ball and scored to tie it 3-3. The coach and parents were very proud of the team for not giving up and putting forth such a strong effort on such a warm night. “The team did not let the score rule their game and they came from behind to tie up the game,” said coaches. This is the second time these teams have met this season and both games ended in a tie. The Thunder next met Seaforth II on July 2 at Sparling’s field in Blyth. Wyatt Bearss stood strong in net as Blyth’s goalkeeper. Blyth and Seaforth played a competitive game in the first half with Blyth leading the scoring by two at the end of the half. Blyth started making accurate passes and really showed some great team work in the second half of the game scoring several more goals. J.P. VanDorp and Derek deBoer scored three goals each. Broda scored two, Joel Pizzati, Ben Nonkes and Trystan Weber scored one goal each. Assists were earned by Broda, deBoer, Robbie Gordon, Pizzati, JanPaul and Leendert VanDorp and Trystan Weber. Dale, deBoer, Zach Drost, Damion Greidanus, Pizzati, Rick Pot and L. VanDorp did a great job as the defensive lineup for the night, making a great effort to clear the ball out of their end. The final score was 11-1 for Blyth. Got him! The Brussels Squirts were in action last week, hosting the Wolverines from Seaforth on a cold and rainy night.
