Johnston, son of Sparling and Beth
Johnston of RR2 Bluevale, were
married at Bluevale Presbyterian
Church on June 13, 1959.
The service was presided over by
Rev. T.E. Kennedy. Attendants at the
wedding were the bride’s sister,
Lillian Campbell (now Smith) and
the groom’s brother, Glen Johnston.
After the wedding, the couple
embarked on a road trip of a
honeymoon. First the Johnstons
headed east to Lake On The
Mountain in Prince Edward County
before taking a tour of the Thousand
Islands and entering the United
States at Cornwall. Once south of
the border, the pair travelled to
Whiteface Mountain in New York
before returning back to Ontario
through Niagara Falls.
The Johnstons then settled down at
RR2 Bluevale where Ken began
farming and Bessie soon took a job
as a copywriter for CKNX.
Both have since retired for the
most part, while Ken still does the
occasional mechanical work around
the area.
The Johnstons welcomed three
sons into their family: Paul, who is
now married to Joyce; Kevin, who is
now married to Kelly and Darren,
who is now married to Melissa.
The Johnstons also have eight
grandchildren: Jill, Thomas, Jeran,
Jayden, Landon, Olivia, May and
Gabrielle. In addition to Ken still getting hishands dirty with occasionalmechanical repairs and Bessiepiping with the Brussels Legion PipeBand, over the years the couple hasenjoyed many short trips around the
province with the Huron County
Beef Producers.
As a special surprise at the open
house, Ken’s uncle Allan Barnard,
the only living uncle or aunt on
either side of the marriage, came to
the celebration.
There were also other guests whomade the trip from Stratford as wellas Mississauga, Kincardine,Listowel, Wingham, Brussels andthroughout the area. After the dinner, several familymembers entertained Ken and Bessie
and the rest of the crowd with some
humourous trivia about the happy
couple.
The guests were then treated to a
skit by some of Ken and Bessie’s
grandchildren, which also brought
about many laughs.
