HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-07-02, Page 9Happy Canada Day. I hope
everyone had a great day with family
and friends.
Summer is officially here with the
end of the school year and a break
from driving the bus. The children
have been crazy and silly on the bus
for days, until the final day and then
it seemed they were more subdued. I
think they realized that they were not
going to see their friends every day
and it made them a little bit sad.
Hugs, shouts of goodbyes, see you
sometime or next year were shouted
every time someone got off the bus.
On the whole, I would say I have a
pretty good bunch of kids on the bus,
but there are days. One little girl
asked me if I would miss them. My
answer – sure, I’ll miss the yelling,
the little fights among them, me
telling them to sit down, and the
days that would drive anyone crazy.
But then there are the days they can’t
wait to tell me something exciting,
it’s their birthday, they got a goal in
hockey or a home run, new baby
brother or sister or they have been on
a holiday or went to Grandma’s
house.
Every day is a new day with both
some good and bad, but I do enjoy
the job.
Graeme and Helen Craig were the
hosts for the Craig family picnic last
weekend. They had around 50
family members in attendance. The

for a job well done.
Congrats to Abi Corbett and
Melinda Ten Pas for having a
successful barbecue on Thursday in
downtown Brussels. The weather
wasn’t very kind to them as they got
quite wet during the downpour at
lunch time. The many who attended
enjoyed delicious burgers or hot
dogs. Many made donations to their
fundraising efforts for the ladies

Monday night baseball had a good
turnout of children again last week.
About 15 children were under the
direction of two parents helping out.
Jeff McKee and Charles Gulutzen
filled in for regular volunteers,
Blaine Marks and Ron Stevenson,
who were off playing for the Walton
Brewers.
The kids are really enjoying
learning how to catch, throw and hit.
Running the bases and the game of
scrub is always the highlight.
Thanks to a couple of moms, the
younger group of five and under,
also have a little game of ball going
as well. Come out and join the fun on
Mondays at 7 p.m.
The Walton Wonders have put
together a couple of wins. Last week
in a game against the Young Guns,
the Wonders were behind until the
sixth inning, when three timely hits
put them ahead by one. Scoring four
more runs in the seventh followed by
a couple of good defensive plays in
the bottom of the inning ended the
game 15-10 for the Wonders.
The second win came this week
when the Wonders travelled to
Wroxeter. The first couple of
innings, the teams played well with
Wroxys taking the lead in the
second.
The Wonders added a couple of
runs in each of the next couple of
innings, before breaking out with a
nine-run inning in the fifth. The
teams played the game out with the
final score 25-8.
The Wonders had some hot batters
with Lisa going six for six at bat.
The Wroxys strong hitter had a
home run and they also had a double
play on the night.
Ladies slo-pitch is played in
Walton, Brussels, Ethel, Belgrave,
Wroxeter and Monkton on Thursday
at 7 p.m.
The Walton Brewers played a
rescheduled game at the park on
Sunday afternoon. They hosted the
Goderich Orioles. The Orioles took a
commanding lead scoring four runs
in the first inning and hen another
two in the second, off Brewers’
pitcher Scott McDonald.
Coming in to pitch was Scott
Leonhardt who gave up only one run
the rest of the game. Leonhardt also
earned 10 strikeouts for the 5 1/3
innings pitched.
The Brewers’ bats struggled in the
first three innings of the game and
were held scoreless until the fourth
when they scored one to be down by
six. The bats came alive in the fifth
scoring three runs and scoring
another two in the sixth to be down
by one in the final inning of the
game.
The Brewers, in the bottom of the
seventh, managed to string together
three timely hits to score another two
runs and defeat the Orioles 8-7.
Great batters for the day for the
Brewers included Matt Shortreed
going two for two with a two-run
double, Darryl Houston hitting a
triple, Blaine Marks two for two with
the game-winning hit and Ron
Strome hitting a two-run homerun.
Marks also had two great
defensive plays during the game.
Their next home game is July 7 at
8 p.m.
Raising the bar
At Grey Central Public School last week some shirts were handed out to intramural student
leaders for the year. The nine students assisted teacher Kim Strome in running intramural
athletics for the year, chipping in with everything from signing students up to refereeing the
actual games. The Raising The Bar program is funded through the Ministry of Health. From
