team played in the Lucknow
Strawberry Summerfest tournament
last weekend. The team was made up
of players from both of Blyth’s U-12
teams.
Their first game was played
Thursday night against the Clinton
Chargers. It took a while for the
team to come together. Late in the
first half Quintin Sjaarda started the
scoring.
Ben Nonkes passed to Dalton
Carey, who put up a nice cross in
front of the net. Sjaarda was there
to head the ball between the
pipes. Sjaarda scored again before
the end of the half with Carey
assisting.
The second half started off well
for Blyth with Nonkes scoring twice
early in the half. Carey and Sjaarda
once again assisted.
Clinton managed one successful
attack resulting in a goal.
Brennan Kolkman finished off the
scoring with Chantal Van Schaik
picking up an assist.
Matt Terstra was solid in net for
Blyth.
On Saturday for their second game
Blyth faced the Brussels Bandits.
Everyone knew this would be a
tough match.
The Storm took an early lead with
Nonkes feeding the ball to Sjaarda
for the first goal.
Brussels came storming right back
to tie it a few minutes later.
Before the end of the half
Kolkman and Nonkes set up Carey
for the Storm’s go ahead goal.
Brussels started the second half off
strong with a goal to tie the game.
The Storm were not to be out done
and Nonkes scored with Leanne
Plunket assisting. With the one-goal
lead Blyth was able to hold Brussels
for most of the second half and take
the win.
Terpstra did a great job in the
Blyth net to earn the win.
The last game of division play was
against Goderich BMO. It took a
while for the Storm to find the net
but once they did they made it look
easy. It was late in the half before
Carey scored on a header off of Rick
Pot’s corner kick. Then Sjaarda put
a mid-air shot into the net from
another of Pot’s corner kicks. The
last goal of the half started with
Nonkes handling the ball most of the
length of the field before passing off
to Sjaarda for another goal.
The second half was all Storm as
well. Carey and Nonkes scored on
penalty shots. Carey scored twice
more before the end of the game
with help from Sjaarda and Plunket.
Evan Kikkert did a great job in net to
keep Goderich off the score board.
Three wins was not enough in this
tournament. Blyth had three goals
against which put them in third
place and into the bronze medal
game against Clinton Wildfire.
Once again Terpstra was called on
to defend the Blyth net. Clinton took
control of the game at the start and
took an early lead over the
Storm.
The Storm picked up their defense
and kept Clinton out of the Blyth net
for the rest of the game.
Blyth’s offense had their chances
but just had no luck around the
Clinton net. Clinton took the win 1 -
0.
The Storm had a great effort from
all its players. Forwards were Dalton
Carey, Jacob Wiersma, Leanne
Plunket, Quintin Sjaarda and Ben
Nonkes. Midfielders were Brennan
Kolkman, Rick Pot and Chantal Van
Schaik.
On defense were Justin Shotreed,
Carlene Bremner, Eric Steele and
Hillary Schramm.
Goal tending and defense duties
were split between Matt Terpsta and
Evan Kikkert.
