North Huron council was called upon to referee at its June 15 meeting as Wingham merchants faced off about sidewalk sale days. Council had been presented with information earlier, and a request to close two blocks between July 23- 25. However, there were some retailers not happy with the decision and hoped to have it reversed. Councillors pointed out this wasn’t a municipal issue, noting that they can’t make a decision then have the opposing side show up and expect them to change their minds. It was suggested that the merchants begin to work together for the betterment of the downtown as a whole. *** Council approved the recommendation to continue the current practice of billing vacant rental units a minimum bill. *** No flowers will be placed on Hanna Bridge in 2009 due to bridge reconstruction. Options will be explored for the placement of the flowerboxes on the bridge once the works is completed. *** Two manure tanks will be purchased for the capture of rainwater from municipal buildings for municipal purposes. *** An application is being submitted under the Community Adjustment Fund for the construction of a fire hall in Blyth. It will be submitted as an 80/20 split. *** A $50 bursary and plaque will be presented to the most improved graduating student at the four public schools in the township. *** Council supported the resolution of the Central East North Huron Accommodation Review Committee recommending the construction of a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school and recognition of public opposition to moving Grades 7 and 8s into the high school. Council would commit $125,000 to the project or an in-kind donation. Happy birthday to Stephen Thompson of Clinton who celebrates July 3. Happy 80th birthday to Roy Young who will celebrate his special day on July 4. Happy birthday as well to Brenda Brooks who celebrates on July 7 and to Nicole Kerr who will celebrate on July 8. We are glad to hear that Merv Ritchie is back home from Clinton hospital and is reportedly doing well. Congratulations to Jamie Craig of Atwood who graduated Grade 8 on Wednesday, June 24. Those attending were his parents Doug and Joyce Craig and his grandparents Jim and Jeanne Rittinger of Kitchener and Marilyn Craig of Blyth. Summer sure came with a vengeance! We have waited a long time for this weather. School is out and the kids are excited. Have a safe and fun summer. Katherine Kaszas brings a favourite play from her tenure as artistic director back to Blyth in a new production. The Mail Order Bride by Alberta playwright Robert Clinton is now in rehearsal and opens on July 10. Brad Rudy leads the cast as an aging farmer who remembers the life of his neighbours and family during the early decades of the 20th century. In his Blyth debut, after more than 20 seasons at Stratford, Rudy’s character narrates the story and interacts with the characters and the audience. Charles Teeter, played by newcomer Daniel Roberts, is the farmer who sends away for the bride, and Catherine Fitch (Against the Grain/Courting Johanna) plays the mail order bride, an educated woman with a sense of adventure. Associate artistic director Gil Garratt (Against the Grain/Courting Johanna) plays Russell Teeter, a pilot in world war two and Korea; Daniel Brière as Art Milligan, the travelling salesman; Marion Day (Harvest/Innocence Lost) as Rachel Teeter – the daughter of Charlotte and Charles; and Claire Burns as Eva Teeter, the wife of Russell. The Mail Order Bride won the Alberta Playwriting Competition and the Alberta Writers Guild Drama Award. Kaszas led the Blyth Festival through a period of great growth and change as artistic Director from 1984 - 1990. Since leaving Blyth, Kaszas has served as the associate artistic director of Canadian Stage in Toronto and interim artistic director at Factory Theatre, dramaturg of the Banff Centre for the Arts and has directing credits in professional theatres from coast to coast. Kaszas is currently the artistic director of the performing arts programmes at St. Clair College in Windsor. Kaszas first produced The Mail Order Bride in Blyth followed by tours to southwestern Ontario and Alberta in 1988 and 1989. The Mail Order Bride previews on July 8, opens on July 10 and runs until Aug. 14.
