The Citizen, 2009-06-25, Page 7THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2009. PAGE 7.Four elementary schools in HuronCounty will receive funds for treesand shade structures to protect children from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The Southwest Public Health Skin Cancer Prevention Network launched the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest earlier in the year. They recently announced 26 schools would receive funding, including Seaforth Public School ($2,000), Hullett Central Public School ($1,000), Clinton Public School ($750) and Hensall Public School ($750). Public health nurse and network member Anne Haley says the group got 55 entries from across the southwest region. “We were pleased that so many schools recognized the importance of protecting children from harmful UV rays. We knowthat frequent sun exposure andsunburns before age 18 increase your risk of developing malignant melanomas later in life.” Haley says it’s particularly important for schools to be aware of the risk because children are at school during the highest risk period of the day between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. They spend a significant amount of this time outdoors for recess, lunch, physical education, field trips, outdoor education and extracurricular activities. Monetary awards for winning entries ranged from $500 to $2,000. Schools will complete their shade projects before the end of the calendar year, pending Boards of Education’s approval of plans. Speaking out Hullett Central Public School had four students place in the Blyth Legion’s public speaking contest earlier this year, from left: Andy Lubbers, youth and education chair for the Blyth Legion; Emily Wilts, third place in the junior division; Valerie Westerhout, second place in the junior division, Lexie Aitken, first place in the junior division, Courtney Middegaal, second place in the intermediate division and Thelma Johnston, member of the Blyth Legion.
