The Coalition for Huron Injury
Prevention (CHIP) is launching its
summer speeding awareness cam-
paign. CHIP member, OPP Const.
Joanna Van Mierlo says, “The sum-
mer months are a prime time for fatal
collisions. Motorists are driving too
fast, and because the roads are dry
and bare they are less cautious
behind the wheel.”
Speeding not only increases the
risk of being in a crash, but also the
severity of the crash and the severity
of injuries. “As your speed increases,
you have less time to react and it
takes a greater distance to stop,” says
Van Mierlo.
Over the summer, a speed sign will
be set up in various locations around
the county showing motorists how
fast they are driving. Within a week,
local police will be enforcing the
posted speed limit in that area with
zero tolerance.
In October 2007, the provincial
government introduced new legisla-
tion to curb excessive speeding.
Streetracers, stunt drivers and those
who drive 50 km/h above the speed
limit now face licence suspension
and vehicle impoundment for seven
days, a minimum fine of $2,000 up
to $10,000, and six demerit
points.
So far, 58 motorists in Huron
County have been charged under this
law.
Blyth-area actress and dramaturgeShannon Scott is undertaking a newproject for the London FringeFestival and has asked some of herstudents for some help with Skirts InA Box.
While none of the girls from the
Serious FUN! Theatre Company,
Scott’s theatre group based out of
her Blyth-area home, will be appear-
ing on stage, they have been con-
tributing behind the scenes, helping
Scott and her actors along.
Scott has been working with
young actors in the area for years
now and she participated in last
year’s Blyth Festival, but this is new
ground for her.
Scott says the project was created
to give theatre students work experi-ence by writing and creating a chil-dren’s show. Having never travelleddown this road before, her work withthe Serious FUN! Theatre Company, the Blyth Festival and local play-
wright Briana Brown has prepared
her to step out on her own, she
says.
The play, which is being done in
collaboration with Fanshawe
College, will feature three actors
from the college being directed by
Scott through the company Good
Girl Productions, comprised of the
three actors and Scott.
The actors, who range in age from
19 to 21, will be playing children
aged 10 to 14 and had their work cut
out for them playing children Scottsaid. So to help, Scott brought insome of her young actresses fromthe Serious FUN! Theatre Companyto help and participate in a workshopwith the Fanshawe College actors.
Through open discussions and
improvisational exercises, Scott
says, the girls gave the Fanshawe
actors a lot of insight into the young
actors, not just the stereotypes.
The play starts with a simple chil-
dren's’ premise, a game of truth or
dare, however, throughout the course
of the game, the lives of eight young
girls are turned upside down and
they have the chance to change for
the better.
While each girl has her own dis-
tinctive personality, the decisionfaces each one as to whether she willstay trapped in the box of stereotypeor if she chooses to take her chanceand finally break free. Each traditional schoolgirl stereo-
type is represented, from the Goody
Two-Shoes to the Tomboy.
