HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-06-18, Page 6Monday night baseball
basics had a great turnout
even though the weather was
not as nice as people would
have liked. It was cool, windy
and damp at times but that
didn’t dampen the enthusiasm
of the kids. There were 18
boys and girls participating.
Three men were helping out
for the evening, Blaine
Marks, Charles Gulutzen and
Jeff McKee. They had their
hands full and the kids had a
great time. The little ones on
hand also had fun on the
adjoining lawn.
Thanks to Terry Gulutzen
for taking the smaller ones for
their own batting practice and
fun.
It has been another week of
unseasonal weather and we
are halfway through the
month of June. Normally, we
have had plenty of hot, hot
days and the bus would have
been sweltering. This has not
been the case and lots of days
the windows have hardly been
opened. Maybe the final days
of school, and many class
trips and playdays, will enjoy
nicer, warmer weather.
Congratulations to Sherri
Huether on her recent
marriage to Jeff Hamilton.
They were wed last weekend
at the Old Courthouse in
London. There were 175
guests enjoying the beautiful
ceremony and reception.
Sherri is the daughter of Brian
and Dianne Huether and
granddaughter of Mary
Huether.
A welcome to Brussels
goes out to Gerald Watson.
He has moved into an
apartment at Huronlea.
Gerald and his late wife
Berva, lived many years just
outside of Walton and after
selling the farm moved to
Goderich. Now he is back
among his old Walton friends
and has his daughter Mary
Bernard and family close by.
Get-well wishes go to Ruth
Schade who has suffered a
fall. She has been in hospital,
but is home now. We hope she
comes along quickly.
We understand that Chester
Higgins is in London hospital.
We hope he is improving
following his surgery and will
be home soon.
Things look a little different
around Gerry Ryan’s place.
The old shed was taken down
this week and cleaned up. It’s
always surprising how
different a place looks when
something has been removed.
It is graduation time of year.
Travelling to Toronto to
attend her University of
Toronto graduation exercise
was Jody Semple. She was
accompanied by her mom and
dad, Gail and Calvin Semple
and Darryl Houston. Jody
graduated with her Masters in
social work. They left for
Toronto on Monday evening
and the ceremony was held
Tuesday morning. They
enjoyed the day together and
came home.
The day wasn’t over for
Jody. When Darryl returned
from playing baseball, he had
another special graduationgift for her. A beautifulengagement ring now adornsthe hand of the graduate.Congratulations to Jody andDarryl.Jim and Linda McDonaldand Barry Youngaccompanied SarahMcDonald to her convocationceremony from teacher’s
college at Brantford Campus
of University of Wilfrid
Laurier. Sarah graduated with
her Bachelor of Education
degree. The foursome
enjoyed a celebration dinner
together before returning
home. Congratulations Sarah.
Visiting in the area on the
weekend were Bill and Donna
Hamilton. They were staying
with Pauline Gulutzen in
Westfield. They were staying
for four days and for those
who remember Bill, he is
quite a comedian. Put him
together with Pauline and
they must laugh all the time.
They dropped into the church
on Friday evening when I was
there working with Patty
Banks, and now I can
confirm, he’s quite the guy.
They were down to London
for the wedding of relatives,
Lisa Cardiff, daughter of
Victor Cardiff, formerly of
the Brussels area.
It wasn’t Friday the 13th
but Saturday the 13th for a
motorcycle outing. The
weather was beautiful for the
afternoon’s ride. The
motorcycle enthusiasts met at
the home of Paul and Dianne
McCallum for the start of the
ride. They travelled to the
Bayfield area, then back to
Goderich and later home to
the McCallums’.
There were 61 motorcycles
and Dianne reports it was
quite a sight watching them
head away. The nearly 90 in
attendance enjoyed a meal at
the McCallums’ and a social
time.
We have a champion to
claim in our small area.
Brandon McGavin is the
Canadian Champion
plowman for his class as of
this past week. Brandon,
along with other family
members has been in Alberta
competing at the
Championship and we will
have a complete story next
week.
A few mothers were
enjoying their last week of
freedom before school is out
by having breakfast at the
Walton Inn. Enjoying their
adult time were Karen
Braecker, Marlene Glanville,
Judy Beuerman, Yolanda
Gubelman, Jeanette Robinson
and Jennifer Vellinga.
Jeannette Robinson reports
that she and her husband
Scott have taken a trip to
Scotland and England. They
were having a second
honeymoon, she says. They
were away 10 days and
travelled 1,505 miles. They
went to places that Scott’s
ancestors were from. In
England they went to the
village of Swine (yes Swine)
and went to Sterling in
Scotland.
They enjoyed great weather
and a great trip.
It was motocross in Walton
on the weekend. It was a great
turnout for the Saturday race
as it was a qualifier for the
Transcan in August. The
weather was perfect and
the track was mint, so the
riders say. There were over 900 entriesin the many classes of races. The third generation of Leeshad his debut on theracetrack. Caden Lee wasriding in two motos andalthough he didn’t have thebest result, he said it was awesome and that’s okay.Matt Lee, who has not beenriding for about 10 years, decided that it would be fun togive it a try again. Matt’snatural ability surfaced and hefinished with a third andfourth-place finish.Other local riders included Godkins and Emmriches. The Walton Little Schoolhad an afternoon offundraising and fun at theschool on Sunday afternoon. There were articles for sale aswell as fun activities. Theyhad a firetruck there for thechildren to learn about.Celebrating birthdays thispast week were Emily Wilts,

The Walton Brewers played
against the Brussels Tigers on
Tuesday evening, June 9.

strikeouts for the night.
The Brewers opened the
scoring in the bottom of the
first inning with three runs.
The Tigers came back to
score their single run in the
second inning on a homerun.
The Brewer bats were hot in
the bottom half of the inning
and they scored seven runs to
take a sizeable lead. The
Brewers finished off the
evening with another two runs
and the game was over after
five innings of play.
The Brewers are on the
road for the next couple of
weeks with no home games
again until July.
The Walton Wonders were
the visiting team at the
Walton Park on Thursday
evening. Their opposition was
the hard-hitting Bookies.
The Wonders had a
scoreless first inning while
the Bookies scored four runs.
Walton chipped away at
the lead getting a run in each
of the next two innings, but
the Bookies added another
run.
The Wonders broke it open
in the fourth scoring five runs
to take the lead.
The Bookies scored three
more runs in the next four
