The well-known Huron County
youth group, Rebels with a Cause,
will be disbanding due to
government budget cuts.
The Rebels are a group of youths
employed by the Huron County
Health Unit to prevent young people
from smoking. The group has
worked to raise awareness in Huron
County youth about the dangers of
tobacco use. Their events included a
beach clean up last summer in which
they collected over 1,000 cigarette
butts.
The Huron County Health Unit
will lose about $115,000 annually as
a result of the budget cuts from the
Ontario Ministry of Health
Promotion. The funding supported
the hiring of six – 10 young people
part-time and one full-time youth
advisor.
Since 2006 health units across the
province have received funding for
the youth program from the Ministry
of Health Promotion through the
Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy.
Medical officer of health, Dr.
Nancy Cameron, says the Rebels
with a Cause have had a positive
impact in Huron County.
“The Rebels have helped young
people across the County realize the
impact of smoking, chew tobacco
use, and second hand smoke.
Young people have a powerful way
of sharing their message that
is effective with other young
people.”
The funding cuts are effective as
of Aug. 31. Dr. Cameron says the
Rebels are determined to go out with
a bang and have many activities
planned over the summer
months.
