Wawanosh 4-H members discuss healthy topicsBy Sophie JeffersonThe second and third meetings ofWawanosh 4-H club, To Your GoodHealth were held at the Auburn Hallon Saturday, May 30.Throughout the first meeting,
which was held in the morning, the
members discussed the importance
of fruits and vegetables in their diet.
When the president, Melissa
Higgins asked roll call, each
member named their favourite fruit
and vegetable. These included:
celery, cauliflower, strawberries,
and apples.
They learned that it is important to
eat different colours and a variety of
items within this group to make sure
that they are getting different
vitamins.
In the second meeting, Mary Ellen
Foran led the business discussion.
The members voted on a title page
and name. Since the members know
it is important to have a balance diet,
they chose Balanced Bodies.
The members began work on
lunch. Four different groups made
pizza dough. Even though some
people consider pizza to be junk
food, the Balanced Bodies knowthat it can have all four food groupson it. The crust is a grain product, cheese is a milk product, and thetoppings the members chose, suchas ham, pepperoni, green pepper,
tomatoes, mushrooms and onion,
give them their vegetables and meat
products.
While the dough was rising, the
members did a judging activity to
evaluate several different meals,
then went outside to play soccer
baseball.
While the pizzas were cooking,
Eileen George got the members to
run a relay race where they had to
sort food items into food groups.
After lunch the members went
outside for a quick break. A variety
of games were played, including one
that Jolande Oudshoorn invented –
double grounder.
The members then went inside for
meeting three about the importance
of breakfast and grain products.
When Melissa Higgins asked roll
call, almost all the members said
that yes they had had breakfast and
shared their choices.
Eileen George reminded themembers how important breakfastwas and gave them suggestions onhow to make their breakfastshealthier or how to incorporate oneinto their morning.
One main component of many
breakfasts is an item from the grainproducts food group. The members read a page in theirbook, then got into groups toperform skits or songs about grainproducts.
Ellen and Reba Jefferson led the
members outside for a spirited gameof rubber chicken. It was very windywhich just made it more fun. After running around so much, themembers were hungry and headedback inside to close the meeting and
munch on some snacks.

A positive attitude is the key. That
was the message delivered by David
O’Rourke of O’Rourke Transport of
Dublin when he came to speak to the
Central Huron 4-H Swine Club for
the second meeting on May 18 at the
Winthrop United Church.
Mr. O’Rourke spoke about how to
handle pigs during the transportation
process. One suggestion he gave the
members was to load three or four
pigs at a time.
He stressed the importance of
keeping a watchful eye for stressed
animals. A pig that is stressed might
be panting or lying down and
refusing to get up.
Mr. O’Rourke showed the
members a video that displayed
humane methods of transporting
swine. A positive attitude is the key
to successfully transporting a swine
crop.
After thanking Mr. O’Rourke for
his informative presentation the
members were treated to ice cream
and maple syrup by their leaders
Don Dodds, Barb Storey and Darrell
Bergsma.
Swine Club meets in Winthrop,
learns about transporting pigs
By Vicki Blake
This year the Belgrave Brussels
Beef Club started with its first
meeting which was held on May 6 at
the home of leader Paul Coultes.
They took a tour of his feedlot. He
showed them what he feeds his
cattle, then they made educated
guesses on what type of breed he
had.
They ended the meeting by
nominating the executive: president,
Crystal Blake; vice-president, Lana
Shapton; secretary, Emily Baker and
press reporter, Vicki Blake.
The second meeting was held at
Green’s Meat Market in Wingham.
They discussed the types of cuts,
then went in and watched as they cut
up a whole side of the beef.
Members were very impressed
about how regulated the temperature
was and how many different federal
and provincial regulations there
are.
They saw the freezer where the
meat is hung.
