Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Midget AAs had a record nine girls
selected to attend the Under-17 Girls
Hockey Prospect Tournament in
Etobicoke this weekend.
Chelsey Draker, Listowel; Gina
Murray, Lucknow; Ona Mezenberg,
Kathryn Roy and Dollee Meigs, all
from Owen Sound and Belina
Hooper, Meaford were the six who
are attending the camp. Tammy
Frieburger, Wingham; Victoria
Bertrand, Port Elgin; Kate Wagner,
Sauble Beach had to decline the
invitation due to other
commitments.
All nine girls were invited to the
tournament after several coaches
and scouts spotted them while
playing for the Saugeen Maitland
Lightning AA Midgets throughout
the season and during the Ontario
Provincials in the spring, where they
placed fourth out of 48 teams.
The AA Midget team, based out of
the Howick arena, is a regional
hockey team drawing girls from as
far north as Lions Head and as far
south as Mitchell, that provides the
highest level of play for girls ages
PeeWee to Midget.
The Prospects Tournament is the
top showcase tournament for
Canadian and U.S. scouts in North-
American Girls Hockey. These six
girls played against some of the
most elite girl hockey players in
Ontario and the U.S. from Thursday
to Sunday in Etobicoke.
The tournament had girls flying in
from North Bay, Ottawa, Texas,
Anaheim and even Alaska, among
others, to play and hopefully be
recruited to one of the top NCAA
Division 1 schools or a top Ontario
University.
Thursday, their first day included
three mini-games back-to-back,
fitness testing and many sports
oriented seminars on becoming a
better athlete. Friday through
Sunday included full games and
play-downs to a top team.

Blyth Thunder travelled to
Seaforth for the second week in a
row to play against Seaforth I on
June 4. This was a very close soccer
match and each team played to their
potential to stay in the game.
Seaforth took advantage of a
corner kick and scored a goal to be
first on the scoreboard.
Blyth was determined to tie it and
Hunter Broda set up the ball with a
nice pass to his teammate, Jan Paul
VanDorp, who ran in and scored for
his team.
Tyler Boven played a great half in
net for Blyth and earned man-of-the-
match for this match after covering
the net with a very sore and swollen
finger that had been injured in the
pre-game warmup.
With the goalie injured, Broda
stepped up and did a great shift in
net as Blyth’s keeper for the second
half. Blyth left Seaforth uncovered.
A player took a long shot from the
right side to lob the ball into the net.
This would turn out to be the only
goal of the second half.
Blyth poured on the pressure and
dominated the shots but didn't get
the ball past the keen Seaforth
keeper and defensive players. The
final whistle blew and the score was
a narrow 2-1 victory for Seaforth.
This was Blyth Thunder’s first loss
of the soccer season, coaches said.
Thunder played a game where they
showed some great soccer skills,
team work, ball control and
determination. Blyth really worked
hard to stay in the game and on a
different night, the score might have
had a different ending, as both teams
were very closely matched.”
Whoosh
It was a mighty swing from the Blyth Pre-Mite as he took his
at-bat during a game against neighbouring rivals. Belgrave
swept into town on June 2 for some great baseball. (Vicky

The Brussels U-12 soccer team
played Goderich. It was another
close game. Each team put in three
goals. Scoring for Brussels were
Devin Bachert, with two and Dalen
Martin.
Wyatt Ducharme played well in
net.
