“June is busting out all over …”
The sun and warmth just makes you
want to hum that song. Every view in
southwestern Ontario has many
shades of green and the new blooms
that are all around us give life a lift.
What a beautiful spot we have.Last week we escaped into Greyand Bruce for a few days. What funpuddling around MacGregor PointProvincial Park, great bike trails andlots of spring flowers. Three swans, tundra I think, were having a goodfeed and a rest in one of the weecoves. What majestic creatures.
Lake Huron was at its bluest best,
always a wonder to behold. There is
something very relaxing about the
endless roll of the waves. Oh the
stories they could tell.
A visit to the Bruce National Park
as well as Fanthom Five at
Tobermory gives you a reason and
reminder to be proud to be Canadian.
Mother Nature has given us such adiverse land to enjoy. Landscape andfarms are different in each area andall seem to be just right for theirplace. So, yes, we had a nice holiday. The Lions elimination time wasSaturday – a time to visit, to eat, tosupport this club that has shown
terrific support for our community
over the years. Scanning the full
floor of the arena, faces from every
part of our community were seen, all
having a good time. Smiling
greetings, thoughtful conversations
and energetic children all sharing
space. Music, face painting and
balloons were the back drop as
people of all ages and interestsenjoyed this time together, aftereating the great meal. The original purpose of this night, the lottery for cash is almost anafterthought after so many years, butit makes for a fun evening as thetickets are eliminated. Ourcommunity knows a good thing and
is always ready to support this cause.
So thanks Lions members for your
continuing efforts to make our area a
better place to live.
Birthday cake was part of the
celebration at Ethel United Church
on Sunday. The Brussels United folk
headed that way to enjoy the worship
service and the friendship of our
partner congregation. Rev. Marilyn
Townsend-Smith from Sarnia was
the guest preacher and is well known
to some as Sandra Cable’s supervisor
– from Sandra’s now past student
days. Special music and words, great
food and visitors made this 132nd
anniversary special.
Enjoy this fine weather and try not
to see all the weeds among the pretty
flowers.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Welcome to the start of the new
Brussels Legion year.
The first weekend had a good-sized
crowd attending the Friday night
supper. Nearly 50 folks arrived to
enjoy the pork chops which
unfortunately ran out before the last
few were fed. They had ham instead.
The music by Just Fun started
earlier and the crowd really enjoyed
the music for the hour they played.
The trio, consists of Don and Dale
Chesher and Ron Howatt. Jo-Ann
McDonald expressed the Branch’s
appreciation to them. These folk
volunteered to provide that little extra
for the Friday night meals once a
month. There was even a couple up
dancing this week and adding a little
fun was a jackman (Australian hobo)
and her hobo bag (dancing matilda)
when the group played Waltzing
Matilda.
The Just Fun trio are off for the
summer and will return in the fall.
This week the dinner will be salsa
meatloaf.
The Branch had two pairs attending
Zone golf on Saturday at the Mitchell
golf course. Andy Overholt, Mike
Dauphin, Eric Ross and Bob
Richardson represented the Branch.
Eric and Bob are moving on to
District competition in Owen Sound.
The Cadet Corps had its year-end
trip on the weekend. Only 17 Cadets
were able to go to Camp Tanner near
St. Marys. They played soccer, went
fishing, slept in tents and enjoyed a
pig roast.
Saturday, June 6 was the 65th
anniversary of D-Day. There were
130,000 troops involved in the assault
in 1944. Canadians were on the front
lines of the Allied forces who landed
on the coast of Normandy and Juno
Beach.
In Normandy, the fighting was
fierce and the losses were heavy.
Approximately 14,000 Canadians
landed on Juno Beach. There were
1,074 casualties (including 359
fatalities).
It is our duty to carry the torch of
remembrance for generations to
come and that We Will Remember
Them.

Lion Jim Prior, left, presents a cheque for $4,000 to Gerry and Thea Rijkhoff of Walton on
Saturday night. The couple was the grand prize winner at the Brussels Lions 38th elimination
