The new medical officer of health, Dr. Nancy Cameron, is in place at the Huron County Health Unit and by all reports things are going well. At the Huron County council meeting May 6, Goderich councillor Deb Shewfelt asked for an update on the health unit. Huron East councillor Bernie MacLellan, chair of the health board, took a no news is good news approach. “Since Dr. Cameron came on board I have not had one staff person get in touch with me for any reason. I believe that lack of communication means things are going well.” MacLellan was meeting the next day with the MOH at her request, he believed to discuss the H1N1 situation. Shewfelt expressed accolades for Dr. Cameron’s work on this issue. “The information she’s feeding toour emergency control person I must commend her on. It looks like things are truly in control.” There was a question raised regarding the announcement of Dr. Cameron and how it was delivered to staff. It was explained that there had been no formal announcement until county council approved the hiring. However, the news came out on the radio before there was a chance to notify staff. “It appears someone reported before we got the communication out. It was simply time. We have to commend radio for getting the word out, but sometimes it’s too quick,” said warden Ken Oke of South Huron. Oke added that he has talked to staff since Dr. Cameron came on board, and noted that “there have been nothing but positive remarks so far.” Full house What better way to spend the unseasonably cool May long weekend than playing cards. There was a good turnout to the Brussels Legion on Saturday for euchre, while the Cadets’ car wash didn’t fare as well in the rain and cold. The kids did sell out at the barbecue, however.
