HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-05-14, Page 17Huron County councillors aregoing to take a look at the libraryboard structure. Councillor George Robertson of
South Huron suggested at the May 6
county council meeting to reduce the
board to the bare minimum. He explained that in the previouscommittee structure for council, library board had been combined withother departments, such as the countyhomes. Since restructuring, however,Robertson said the board meets first
at 9 a.m., and is done a half hour later.
“I got thinking about the expense of
a large library board.”Robertson he asked for informationand learned that in 2008, $20,000 wasspent on staff and board attendance atconferences. “A large number went tothe super conference, and while it’sgood for staff to attend, a number of
board members did too. Their share
was $11,000.”
Robertson suggested that two
members of the public, all that’s
required under the Public Libraries
Act, along with three county
councillors would “cut down a lot of
costs.”
Also, he said they could meet 10
times a year rather than 12 and that
the changes begin in the next term of
office.
Robertson made this a motion,
which was seconded by councillor
Neil Rintoul of Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh.
Goderich councillor Deb Shewfelt,
however, said he would be more
comfortable if the majority of
members were from the public.
John Bezaire, councillor of Central
Huron agreed. Bezaire explained that
when he came on council committees
all had members of the public, whichhe believed allowed them to take aninterest in what government wasdoing. Since everything is now acommittee of council, Bezaire said hehas noticed a change in the
community. “People can’t be
involved. I think we might be
throwing the baby out with the
bathwater. We have a fiduciary duty,
but we’re missing something
important.”
Bezaire also wondered how many
of the people on the board are servingfor the per diem. “Why not ask if theymay be willing to do this on avolunteer basis. Maybe we’re runningto the last option before looking atothers.”Morris-Turnberry councillor
Dorothy Kelly, chair of the library
board, who had interjected earlier
perhaps the discussion should wait
until county librarian Beth Ross was
present, noted now that Ross was
going to prepare a report. “I think it
would be wise to defer this.

A Huron County councillor has
asked council to consider a change
in speed limit for roads Brussels and
Seaforth areas.
At the May 6 meeting Huron East
councillor Bill Siemon questioned
the sudden drop from 90 kms an
hour to 50 kms an hour in the
country areas. He wondered if it
might not be more fair to have these
“stepped down”.
“If a driver is only 10 kms an hour
over in the 90 and doesn’t realize
he’s hit a 50 he’s in danger of being
charged with street racing,” said
Siemon. “I think this is more of a
speed trap.”
Siemon said he had discussed the
issue with public works director
Dave Laurie and believed he would
be willing to act on this with
council’s consent. It was suggested
that Laurie prepare a report to bring
to the committee of the whole for
consideration.
