Kevin and Carol were raised 2 1/2 miles north of Brussels and spent their school years in Brussels. They both live near Cambridge. The Brussels U10-I soccer team started the season with a victory. Brussels travelled to Blyth and the kids were eager. The mighty squad came out kicking. Delayna Smith passed to Devin Bachert to score. Blyth’s defence was strong, but Nathan McNichol passed to Bachert who scored again. In the second half Bachert put in another, but Blyth got a nice goal before game’s end to make the final score 3-1. The Brussels team is made up of Bachert, Justin Ford, Cassidy Heise, Ronan Jared, Nathan McNichol, Taylor McNichol, Harmoni Main, Alexandrea Martin, Jake Mitchell, Kortney Mitchell, Lorren Poland, Dylan Prout, Katie Roth, Hudson Smith, D. Former Brusselite gets coach’s award The Blyth Thunder U-14 boys soccer team hosted its first game of the season on May 7 at Sparling’s field against Clinton Fire. The game was very evenly matched in the first half with both teams taking some shots on net, but neither was able to get on the scoreboard. After a well-deserved halftime break, Blyth came out strong. Jan Paul VanDorp set up the play and Derek deBoer scored the first goal of the night. Blyth received a handball in their defensive end, so Clinton took this opportunity to tie up the game. Mid-fielder Leendert VanDorp set up the next goal and Jan Paul VanDorp scored on the assist from his brother. Wyatt Bearss earned an assist on the next goal as Jan Paul VanDorp earned his second goal of the night. Defender Murray Dale booted the ball up the field from his own defensive end for a long shot and unfortunately the ball hit the goal post. deBoer ran in and shot the rebound into the net for his second goal of the match. Forward Ben Nonkes earned the assist on the final goal of the game and Bearss shot the ball right between the goalie’s legs. The final score of the night was a 5-1 victory for Blyth Thunder. Tyler Boven did a great job in net and only allowed one ball to get past him. Defenders Dale, Zach Drost, Robbie Gordon and Connor Wilts did a great job keeping the ball out of their defensive end, limiting their opponents’ shots on net. Coach Mary Ann Drost was pleased with the team’s performance during the first match of the season. “It takes an entire team to score a goal and win a game,” she said. “Once the team got their first goal, their momentum could not be dampened and they really pulled together to play the second half of the game.” Kickin’ it The soccer season is underway and local fields are busy as teams host opponents from other communities on most nights of the week. May 4, the Blyth U-18 girls got their season off to a great start with a victory over Lucknow.
