There are folks planning their own yard sales as well as the one at the Londesborough United Church. The church group welcomes donations to this sale. Donations can be left at the church any day this week. Bake sale items can be taken in on Friday during the day or early evening or early Saturday morning. The sale is advertised as running from 7:30 a.m. to noon. I don’t know about your calendar this month but at our house every day seems full of things to do. Suddenly the grass needs cut, the gardens need tending and planting, windows need washing, etc. Not to mention all the social things we’ve waited all winter to do. And you all still want your mail every day. But if you are interested in an evening out, take in the cabaret night at the Varna complex on May 30 featuring the Blyth Festival Singers. Along with music by that choir, their guests are soloist Mary Smith and pianist-composer, Agnes-Marie Henderson. The concert, Contemporary Stylings, features contemporary pop and light rock songs. The evening, for $25, includes dinner and silent auction. Tickets are available from all the Festival singers. Londesborough United’s senior choir will gather for practice at 10 a.m. on May 17. The Londesborough United Church Women will hold their May meeting on Monday, May 18, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Lip licking tasty Londesborough was the place for hungry diners on Saturday night as the United Church hosted its ham and salad supper. Darcie Brohman, four, finished up her meal with the warm season treat. (Vicky Bremner photo) It was a full house at the Londesborough Community Hall on Friday, May 8 for the card party hosted by the Happy Gang Seniors. There were 20 tables of euchre players that evening. At the end of playing, Jane and Betty were declared the first-place couple with 77 points. Close behind in second, with 76 points, were Randy and Peter. There was a three-way tie for third place with 72 points – Jack and Helen Lee, Bill and Marjory Humphries and Rita Flynn and Verna Gibbings. Jim and Kathy Bridge and Harold and Doris McClinchey shared the prize for most successful lone hands. Both scored six. The group will hold its next card party on June 12. At their May meeting at the Londesborough Hall on Wednesday, April 29, the seniors’ group was addressed by June Thomas. She gave a demonstration of how she crochets milk bag strips into sleeping mats for children in Third World countries. She and the school would appreciate donations of bags for this project. The pupils from kindergarten toGrade 8 at Hullett Central PublicSchool shared music of many kinds with the audience on May 6. The senior band welcomed everyone with two numbers. The clarinet section was featured in their second selection, Chester. The kindergarten pupils showed that ‘they got rhythm’. Using sticks and movement the JKAs journeyed along the Wizard of Oz’s yellow brick road in time to the music. Action with sticks to the Sesame Street tune was JKB’s part of the concert. Then all the SKs did actions and stick rhythms to the song, It’s a Small World. Lions was the topic of the song offered by the Grade 1 class and the Grade 2/3 class sang about thunder and lightning. The Grade 3 class sang a Tale of Two Toads. The toads got caught in a pan of cream. One toad panicked and sank. The other toad swam and swam until the cream became butter and he easily got out. The moral of this song was ‘just keep on swimming’. Another rhythm exercise taught by Mrs. Barnett was demonstrated by the Grade 3 pupils. As Mrs. Barnett drummed the children paired up and did tapping actions with one-foot wooden dowels. Pupils in Grades 1, 2 and 3 make up Hullett’s primary choir and theyentertained with two numbers. Onewas a song about wheels they have ridden. The other, A Song of Sharing, reminded the audience that when one gives the gift will come back to you. The junior choir of children in Grades 4 and 5 sang about 7 Fat Fishermen and The Rhythm of the Rain, a three-part song. The two choirs joined to sing, Child of the Universe. This number encouraged everyone to let their spirit fly even in an ever-changing world. The senior music class was presented with a challenge – to put together a video presentation about the music they enjoy. The challenge was also to enhance their writing skills for they were to explain the music genre they chose and try to convince others to listen as well. The five presentations viewed that night included country music, classic rock, rock and techno. The attribute recipe this week from the Grade 3s is Perseverance Pie. Ingredients – 1 cup of not giving up, 2 tsp. of always persisting, 1 tbsp of start it, don’t stop it, 1/3 cup of sticking with the game, 2 cups of sticking with any activity. Instructions – Pour into a pie plate and heat oven to 350° and cook for 30 - 40 minutes.
