This year May seems to have
taken over as reminisce month. It
was time again to remember my
days as a student nurse.
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Guelph
holds many memories of my life as a
teen along with several other unique
persons trying to prove to the nuns
and the rest of the world, yes we
really could be nurses! The three
years as a student nurse were truly a
great experience and so I return each
May to renew friendship.
All the graduates of St. Joe’s are
invited to return to celebrate.
Memories are shared, often with
different twists, and usually quite
hilarious. As well, events of the past, ourpresent and futures are shared.Pictures and stories of weddings, children and of course their childrenall take an important place in thetime together. It’s our annual reviewof life. This year two grads from theclass of ’42 were part of the crowd.
So May is a fine month to share,
and this being my 39th reunion, it’s
also a good way to keep the
memories sharp.
Bob and Rene Richmond
celebrated their 50th on Saturday at
the Legion. It was another fun
evening of remembering. Time just
stops when stories are told.
Stories of Richmonds’pool, full of
kids who now have large kids of
their own – that was before the pool
was in Brussels. Stories of hockey
and skiing, neighbours and friends,
church and community, adventures
told and memories enjoyed. Bonnie,
John and Brenda with their families
co-ordinated a fun-filled evening
complete with old pictures and, yes,
they are worth a thousands words.Friends, food and lots of laughsmade a fine way to celebrate thismarriage. So to the whole Richmondclan – keep enjoying life with all it’slaughs.Shawn Kellerman had the floor ofthe Upper Deck last Friday eveningas Jim and Lois and crew handled
supper and a show for an
appreciative audience. The food, of
course, was excellent leading into a
show that made you marvel. The
guitar’s mastery was a joy to watch.
Shawn’s endurance at play was
remarkable. Drum and bass guitar
player filled out the evening of jazz
and blues numbers in fine style.
Thanks guys.
Excellence in Public Education is
a yearly celebration of the Avon
Maitland District School Board. We
should be very proud as two fine
ladies in our midst have been
honoured for their hard work in
education. Leanne Armstrong has
her Masters Degree in
Communicative Disorders. Working
with students and teachers over thepast 10 years improving theircommunication skills has beenLeanne’s role in education. With herpersonality, tenacity and educationshe has shown our world excellencein communication. You can stopsmiling now Jim and Leona – weknow what a great daughter you
have.
The second recipient Lindsay
Watson is a student of excellence. In
26 of her courses she earned a final
mark of 90 or higher. As well her
artistic, athletic and social
contributions to F.E. Madill and
community were recognized.
Mike, Val and Poppa Ralph are
pretty pleased to see her work ethic
recognized. I think it’s neat that
Lindsay is heading to the same
education stream that Leanne
finished 10 years ago.
Enjoy the recognition ladies,
you’ve both worked very hard to
achieve your dreams. Enjoy your
week.

The weekend at the Brussels
Legion Branch began on a saddened
note.
Friday morning was the burial of
the ashes of a late veteran of the
Branch, Gordon Nichol. His son
Robert and wife Molly from
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan along with
Gord’s four grandsons, a
granddaughter and a three-month-
old great-grandson attended. They
arrived to attend the service led by
Sandra Cable along with many other
family members and friends.
Brussels Pipe Band Pipe Major
Don Martin played Amazing Grace.
Following the service the family
enjoyed a light lunch at the Branch.
Comrades helping for the morning
were Deb Cann, Mabel Willis,
Mabel Glanville and Helen Dobson.
The Friday night supper of
salisbury steak was enjoyed by a
good crowd. This week there will be
no supper as it is the holiday
weekend.
Saturday was a busy day with the
celebration of 50 years of marriage
for Bob and Rene Richmond. The
family arrived in the morning to
decorate the hall and to prepare for
the evening’s entertainment. The
Richmonds arrived following the
renewal of their vows, to enjoy a
delicious roast beef dinner with over
160 family, friends, employees and
neighbours. The family then
provided an enjoyable evening of
games, readings, memories and skits
for all to enjoy. Congratulations to
Bob and Rene.
Comrades helping out for the meal
were Glenn and Jean Bridge, Cecil
Moore, Deb Cann, Wanda Walker,
Mary Thomas, Kelly McDonald, Jo-
Ann McDonald and four high school
students earning volunteer hours.
It was a fast cleanup and change to
get ready for the annual Mother’s
Day dinner on Sunday. There were
over 80 folks dining and treating
mother to a meal away from home.
The menu included a variety of
meats and salads to satisfy
everyone’s appetite.
Comrades looking after the day
were the McDonalds – Leona, Neil,
Rick, Jo-Ann, Scott, Alicia, LeeAnn
and Jason Konarski and Deb Cann
and Judy Lee.
The Cadet Corps also had a busy,
wet and cold weekend outing. They
were flagging for the motocross race
at Auburn Hills on the wet Saturday
and the cold Sunday. This is a new
venture for them and hopefully a
good experience.
Their car wash is this weekend.
It’s a perfect time to drop off pop
cans and returnable bottles for them.
They are also having a barbecue so
you can have a bite to eat while you
wait for your car to be washed.
The Corps is working hard to
support themselves and appreciates
the community’s support.
