PAGE 26. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2009.
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority has implemented new
firewood restrictions at Falls Reserve
and Wawanosh Park Conservation
Areas. In an effort to protect local
forests from insect pests, firewood
may no longer be brought into the
conservation areas.
This initiative is being undertaken
to reduce the risk to local forests
from invasive tree pests such as the
emerald ash borer and the Asian
long-horned beetle. Dormant insects
or eggs can be moved in firewood
from infested tress.
Gatehouse staff at Falls Reserve
will ask all visitors if they have
firewood in their vehicle. Visitors
with firewood will be required to
leave the wood at the front gate
where it will be disposed of by park
staff or to keep it sealed in their
vehicle. At Wawanosh Park
Conservation Area information has
been posted informing seasonal
campers and visitors that firewood
may not be brought into the park.
To combat the threat of insect
pests only firewood from the Falls
Reserve Conservation Area’s
supplier will be allowed in the park.
The firewood sold in the park is
guaranteed to come from
uncontaminated sources.
“We recognize that this policy will
cause some inconvenience to park
users this year,” reports Jason Moir,
FRCA superintendent. “It’s a
necessary step to help protect the
health of our watershed forests. Staff
at the conservation areas are working
to inform visitors about the new
policy and why it has been
implemented.”
