HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-04-30, Page 20It was a diamond of a day for
Phyllis and Emerson Mitchell on
Saturday as they celebrated their
60th wedding anniversary with a
party at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre.
The former Phyllis Cuthill of
Walton, daughter of Wilmer and
Kathleen, married the son of Will
and Bessie Mitchell of Grey Twp., at
the Walton church manse on May 7,
1949. Rev. R.G. Hazelwood
officiated.
Marie (Bennett) Coutts and the
late Jack Mitchell were bridalattendants. Following the ceremony thenewlyweds travelled by bus for ahoneymoon in Niagara Falls.
They came home to Lot 9, Conc.
11, in Grey where they farmed. They
raised four sons, Gordon, Ross,
Doug and Neil, and their family has
grown to include 10 grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
The couple retired to Brussels in
2004, after Neil took over the farm,
but can often be found there lending
a hand.
They also began operating a bed
and breakfast many years ago, a
business that has moved with them
to their village home.
They are also busy community
people. Phyllis shares her musical
talent throughout the area at church
services and local events. She is a
member of Duff’s United Church
Women and sings in the church
choir. She plays with the Brussels
Legion Pipe Band, is involved with
the horticultural society and
volunteers her time and talent to
Huronlea.
She was chosen as Citizen of the
Year for Brussels and Area for
2006.
Emerson is also an active member
of Duff’s Church and the Loyal
Orange Lodge of Seaforth.
Besides friends, families and
neighbours in attendance at the
anniversary celebration, there
were also bed and breakfast
‘friends’ present from Wiscon-
sin, Port Hope, St. Catharines,
Niagara, the Meaford area,
Tavistock, Thamesford and
Kitchener.
