The April meeting of the Brussels Melville Presbyterian Guild and Women’s Missionary Society was held in the church parlour on Tuesday evening, April 21 with 10 members present. The meeting opened with everyone repeating the Women’s Missionary Society Purpose. A responsive reading followed and the hymn, Jesus Stand Among Us was sung. Eluned McNair read a story, Quarantined by Fear. Jean Bewley read the scripture John 19: 19-29 and the hymn, God of Grace and God of Glory was sung. The Mizpah Benediction was repeated by all to close this part of the meeting. Alice Marks presided over the business. The minutes of the March meeting were read and approved. The correspondence included a thank you letter from Isabel Gibson. The treasurer’s report was given by Jeanne Kirkby and the WMS treasurer’s report was given by Alice Marks. Plans were made for the Mission Awareness Sunday to be held on May 3. The fashion show, will be held in the church on May 20. Proceeds will go towards renovations for the manse. The roll call was answered with everyone telling what they did to celebrate Easter. Jeanne Kirkby and Alice Marks will be in charge of the May meeting. Lunch was served by Jean Bewley and Eluned McNair. The spring flowers are showing their stuff this week. Now whole clumps are in bloom, not just a few brave ones like a week ago. The rain from the weekend put a new hue to the grass and all the plants took another step to maturity. Lovely. Brussels was a busy place on the weekend, gatherings, celebrations, get-togethers and fundraisers. TheLegion fed the Friday night folksand with that goes the friendship andfun. On Saturday the Mennonitemembers invited everyone tospaghetti dinner with games and funincluded.Meanwhile the Grade 8 class, withthe help of the Legion fish fry gang, held a fundraiser for everyone to enjoy. Parents, students and Legion members all worked to help with the expenses of graduation, coming very soon. All the while Phyllis and Emerson Mitchell were getting ready to host a party to celebrate 60 years of married life in our community. Family and friends realized the significance of this and everyone came, ready to celebrate the part thisvery neat couple has played in ourlives. All the ages were present tochat and dance and sing and swing. It was great to see the connectionsand relationships all together in onespot – good way to have a partyPhyllis and Emerson and thanks forthe great time. The wind did a number on the hydro in Brussels on Saturday evening and several plan Bs were set into action. It’s always good to be reminded of our dependence on the utilities and for a few hours see how we cope. Farmers with generators could relax a little but when animals are involved it’s very serious business to have no power for even a short time. The winds hit the Stratford/Listowelarea harder and building parts andtrees were tossed in inappropriateplaces. We had visitors on theweekend after the neighbour’s treeheaded towards and hit Chris andLara’s house and hydro line. Nomajor damage but something likethat puts a whole different spin onplans. The power of nature still rules. The weekend ended with the Melville congregation feeding the community at their regular springtime supper. A good way to make a little money, share time together and enjoy good cooking and not have to do the dishes – everybody wins. Income tax time is now here and/or passed. Now we’re ready for May with all the good things that it brings – enjoy every minute. Bye now, Betty G.W. Guild, WMS hold meeting Free for all Brussels Mennonite Fellowship held a free-for-all spaghetti dinner on Saturday evening. With the power out Joe Metzger was on barbecue duty. Keeping a close eye on things was a crew of hungry youngsters: Mark Metzger, David Metzg er, Selena Haskins, Michael Haskins, Jo Anna Kipfer, Micah Kipfer, Connor den Dekker, Megan den Dekker and Joel Kipfer.
