With the 2009 spring seatbelt
campaign ready to get underway, the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will
be highly visible throughout the
province to ensure that motorists
everywhere do their part in saving
lives by buckling up.
The Campaign is a partnership
among the OPP, Ministry of
Transportation and other road safety
partners which runs from April 15 -
26.
In OPP jurisdictions last year
(2008), one in four fatally-injured
vehicle occupants were unrestrained
at the time of the crash and many
more were seriously injured for the
very same reason.
There were a total of 78 deaths on
Ontario highways that were
attributed to seatbelt non-
compliance in 2008.
A properly used child seat reduces
a child’s risk of injury in a crash by
as much as 75 per cent. Yet many
child car seats are incorrectly used
or incorrectly installed. When used
correctly, a booster seat provides 60
per cent more protection than a
seatbelt alone.
In a collision, children using
seatbelts instead of booster seats are
three-and-a-half times more likely to
suffer significant injury, and four
times more likely to suffer head
injury.
For this reason, the OPP will be
focusing their efforts on child
restraints during the campaign to
raise awareness and protect children.
For a child safety seat to work, it
must be used correctly. This means
proper installation and choosing the
right seat for your child, which
depends on the child's age, weight
and height. Parents looking for help
should visit
www.ontario.ca/smartlove or
contact their local public health unit.
OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino
says he is appalled that seatbelt non-
compliance is still one of the major
factors in fatalities on our roads.
“After 32 years since the seatbelt
laws came into effect, you would
wonder why we still have to have
these provincial campaigns. It
should be automatic that when you
get into a vehicle you buckle up.”
During the 2008 Seatbelt
campaign in the second half of April,
OPP officers checked over one
million drivers and passengers for
seatbelt compliance and issued over
15,000 offences. Seatbelt non-
compliance draws a fine of $110 and
two demerit points.
As a driver buckle up and make
sure all your passengers and children
are properly secured.

During National Volunteer Week,
April 19-25, the Canadian Cancer
Society acknowledges its hundreds
of dedicated volunteers.
Anita Lobby, volunteer
engagement specialist with the
Canadian Cancer Society, Huron-
Perth Unit, says, “Volunteers are at
the centre of all we do at the Society
and without them, we simply
couldn’t continue to work together
towards our mission of eradicating
cancer and improving the quality of
life of those living with cancer in
communities across Ontario.”
To help ease the burden of cancer,
society volunteers are working in
all capacities across Ontario from
raising funds for lifesaving cancer
research to offering caring support
to people living with cancer to
advocating for healthy public policy
to administrative support in our
local offices.
In 2008:
• 85 volunteer drivers assisted 197
clients, 54 escorts, made 2,468
trips and travelled 216,860 kms. to
cancer-related appointments.
• Nine peer support volunteers and
three cancer support groups were
available to people living with
cancer.
• Volunteers promoted healthy
living and cancer risk reduction in
by distributing our materials and
educating others.
“Society volunteers have
integrity, they are caring, they have
courage and they are progressive.
These values are at the core of
everything they do.” says Lobby.
“Together, we’re strong in the fight
against cancer.
