The Seaforth Business
Improvement Association (BIA) has
a solution to the recent slump in the
economy: Seaforth Smart Money.
Launched on Thursday at
Seaforth’s Town Hall, Seaforth
Smart Money, was available for 90
cents on the dollar, offering local
consumers a 10 per cent hometown
discount if they shop where they
live.
Cathy Elliott, chair of the Seaforth
BIA, presented the concept to Huron
East council at its April 7 meeting.
Elliott, along with Huron East
economic development officer Jan
Hawley, presented this local
stimulus package, urging people to
think Seaforth first.
The program is underway now and
Seaforth Smart Money can be spent
at any of the Seaforth BIA
businesses who display the Smart
Money sign in their window.
Currently there are 48 participating
in the program.
There will be three issues of
$20,000 each, with the first one
taking place last week.
The idea behind the three
distributions, in addition to a $300
limit per person, per issue, is that the
Smart Money is spread around,
giving many people a chance to use
it, rather than having a handful of
people buy it all up.
All three issues will expire by
January.
This is a large project, Elliott said,
comprising 57 per cent of the BIA’s
annual budget.
The project, while it had just been
launched, caught the attention of
Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb, who
provided council with a letter of
recognition and commendation to be
presented to Elliott and the Seaforth
BIA at the April 7 meeting by mayor
Joe Seili.
