Happy Easter to everyone. It was a
busy Easter Saturday at the Brussels
Legion Branch with the celebration
of 60 years of marriage for George
and Maxine Adams.
The day started with an open
house in the afternoon with nearly
200 folks dropping by to wish
George and Maxine best wishes on
their special day. The hall was
beautifully decorated with fresh
spring flowers and Easter chocolates
on the table. Those attending
enjoyed a luncheon and punch. The
guests were treated to many picture
boards as well as a collage of
pictures shown on the television.
The family then had a program at
4 p.m. with congratulatory messages
from the MP and MPP, the
Governor-General and I believe, the
Queen.
The family told stories of growing
up and of the couple, then offered up
a champagne toast to George and
Maxine.
After the open house the tables
were set for the family and over 60
guests to enjoy a roast beef dinner
provided by the Legion catering
group.
Congratulations to George and
Maxine from the Branch.
Darts had 13 taking aim at the
boards with the eventual winners of
the evening being Roger McHardy,
Norm Dobson and Catrina Josling.
The second-place team was Marlene
Little and Lawrence Machan.
There were three high shots by
Harry Smith 133, Don Kitchen 125
and Sandra Josling 101.
The Branch was closed for Good
Friday, so there was no Friday night
supper. This week will be roast beef.
Elections are coming up on April
28. It is hoped that lots of Comrades
will attend the meeting. Membership
is a concern and new members are
always welcome to join.
Call the Branch and find out how
easy it is to become a member of one
of the largest organizations in
Canada.

Happy Easter. The season is here.
Resurrection of life, time for new
things to appear, time for growth,
birth and renewal. Time to celebrate
life itself.
The sun is getting warmer and
we’re able to see life grow. The tips
of the trees getting ready to shoot,
the leaves from the bulbs are inching
up by the day and the wee finches
show their new yellow feathers with
happiness.
Ahh, spring. With families gathering tocelebrate Easter – a sure sign ofspring is growth of grandchildren.Wee bodies growing at tremendousrates, old pants hitting the high watermark and sleeves no longer coveringwrists show the evolution of time.New clothes are a nice part ofEaster and a reason to celebrate thehealth of the children. New rubber
boots, probably a plastic compound
now, are always a winner especially
the ones in lime green or startling
pink.
Some things remain, a new ball, a
container of bubbles, a book or chalk
still bring a smile to many faces. Curt
and Julie’s Ella is at the stage that
rolls of tissue are sweet – she brings
a new definition to the term –
thunder thighs – and I’m sure will
not be pleased in later years to see
the photos. But for now she is sweet
and very squeezable.Easter celebrations werehappening all over the place lastweek. Churches had full schedules asthe most important event of Christianhistory was celebrated in variousforms. The Holy Week story has been toldin many ways and we all hear it withour own ears but the news is the same– life goes on, we are loved and God
will look after our needs.
As April slips away we need to
remember our responsibility to the
Earth. We can figure out the best way
to celebrate Earth Day on April 22
and make new habits that will make
a difference to our place on earth.
Before that you can support the
work of the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority. They keep
tabs on our river and the surrounding
land. Education remains the best way
to improve the world and so the
Maitland Valley Foundation supportsthe Wawanosh Nature Centre. This isa place one needs to visit in everyseason to see how the world of naturechanges. By supporting the dinner onFriday night you are giving ourschools the opportunity to show ourchildren their place in nature veryclose to home.Other special times are advertisedthrough the seasons for the public to
enjoy. Think beyond yourself and
support this good work. It’s a fun
way to help maintain a healthy space
for life.
Listening to the family gathered
here on the weekend, summer plans
are taking form – graduation
meetings, summer jobs, holiday
plays, weddings, babies – life goes
on and it is good.
Enjoy the growth of spring,
including the dandelions.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Couple celebrates at Legion
It was a diamond celebration on
Saturday afternoon, April 11 as
George and Maxine Adams of
Brussels marked 60 years of
marriage.
Family, friends and neighbours
turned out to an open house at the
Brussels Legion to honour the
couple.
It was actually April 2 in 1949
when the pair were united in
marriage. The bride was the
daughter of Elmer Farrish and the
former Hilda Whyte. Her groom
was the son of Gorrie residents
Russel and Merle (Doig) Adams.
Following a honeymoon trip to
Niagara Falls they returned to
Howick to begin their married life.
After a time they moved to
Turnberry Twp. where they farmed
for 42 years until their retirement to
Brussels in 1997.
Among those present at the open
house were the couple’s four
children, Jean Beard, Alex, Carol
and Susan, and their grandson Adam
Beard.
