(Courtesy photo) The Brussels, Morris and Grey diabetic meetings resumed on Wednesday, March 18 at Huronlea, Brussels when guest speaker Lisa Vandewalle spoke on the new program she and Regina Campbell are starting in Huron and Perth Counties. They are interested in getting information out to the communities and wanted the members to tell groups that they would be available to talk on diabetes. There are many people unaware that they have the disease. Then she shared a new Canadian Diabetes Association handout. She tried to help members remember important tests by relating them to the ABC’s, then to plumbing definitions. Vandewalle had a visual image of what arteries might look like over a lifetime. Members were encouraged to try to keep their ‘pipes’ clean. She discussed when and what test should be done. She also said diabetics should be keeping track of the tests by asking the nurse or nurse practitioner the results. Vandewalle noted it has been suggested to check the glucose monitoring meter against the lab at least once a year. She explained just how to do this. She shared bags of goodies and pamphlets with the group. Nelva Scott thanked Vandewalle and gave her a small token of appreciation. There were a few questions, then Linda Walker served lunch, St. Patrick’s style. Business included asking Vandewalle to see if she could find more interested members and see if putting a notice in church bulletins would help. The treasurer’s report was given and suggestions for fall speakers were made. April 8 in Mitchell is the Diabetic Information Day. For the next meeting, Wednesday, April 15 members are to meet at Foodland at 8 p.m. Rebecca Blaine, dietician, who is part of the Huron community Family Health Team will meet them and take them on a shopping tour. The Wednesday, May 20 meeting is scheduled back at Huronlea when there will be information on equipment available from MacKnay Mobility.
