MURRAY GAUNTMurray Gaunt, a very active figurein local politics and broadcasting, died on March 31, 2009, with hisfamily at his side at the LondonHealth Sciences Centre.
Murray Andrew Gaunt was 73.
The funeral service was held on
Saturday with Rev. Bernard
Skelding presiding at St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church in Wingham.
Interment at Wingham Cemetery.
Gaunt worked for CKNX twice
throughout his lifetime. He was an
MPP for Huron-Bruce for 18 years
and has been inducted into the
Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame.
The son of Andrew and Matilda
Gaunt (nee Sherwood), Gaunt was
born on June 4, 1935 in West
Wawanosh.
Gaunt was born into agriculture.
He was involved with the Lucknow
Beef/Calf Club at the age of 12 and
had won The Queen’s Guineas at the
1955 Royal Winter Fair, one of the
most prestigious beef awards in
Canada.
He won the award while attending
the Ontario Agricultural College. He
graduated in 1956.
Soon after, Gaunt looked to his
father in establishing a turkey broiler
operation. He initially intended to
stay in the turkey business for the
rest of his life. However, then-
CKNX farm editor Vaughan
Douglas offered him a position.
Gaunt resisted at first, but eventually
went in for an interview.
After several days of discussion,
Gaunt accepted the position as
CKNX’s assistant farm editor in
1959.
Gaunt worked with CKNX forseveral years. Though he describedhis first few years in Wingham asdifficult, he said he felt it was aneffective way to draw positiveattention to the agricultural industry.
In 1962, while working for
CKNX, Gaunt interviewed Huron-
Bruce MPP John Hanna just hours
before his untimely death. Through
several avenues, including the pork
producers marketing board, Gaunt
had interviewed Hanna several times
over the last three years.
The next day, a by-election was to
be called to fill Hanna’s position,
which the local Liberal Association
suggested Gaunt run.
Gaunt initially said no. However,
he later consented and won the by-
election. He eventually won four
more elections and served nearly 20
years as an MPP.
During his time, Gaunt also
served as the Liberal agricultural
and environmental critic, working
on advancing the cause of
agriculture across the riding, the
province and the country.
While he officially retired from
politics in 1981, Gaunt continued to
work with the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture on a special task force
charged with the financial
difficulties facing farmers as well as
serving on the Beef Marketing
Commission’s marketing agency
initiative.
Soon after his retirement from
politics, Gaunt returned to CKNX as
the farm editor. There, he developed
a new format for the noon-hour
program, as well as designing the
half-hour television show, The
Friendly Farmer, which aired from1987 to 1992.Gaunt stayed on at CKNX until1999, but continued to provide theradio station with material forseveral years afterwards. Then in
2005 he was inducted into the
Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame,
one of only 153.
Gaunt was also a long-time
member of the Wingham Lions
Club.
Gaunt was the beloved husband of
the former Patricia Deyell; dear
father of Stephen and Judith Gaunt
of London and Stephanie and Jeff
Bloemberg of Wingham; loving
grandfather of Andrew, Christine,
Adam and Caleb Gaunt and Kaitlin,
Josh, Emily, Hannah and Noah
Bloemberg; son-in-law of Emma
Deyell of Wingham; brother-in-law
of Dianne and Jim English of
Bluevale, Terry and Brenda Deyell
of Wingham and Brian and Marjorie
Deyell of Belmore.
Gaunt was predeceased by his
parents Andrew and Matilda Gaunt
(nee Sherwood), his granddaughter
Amanda Gaunt, his father-in-law
Norman Deyell, his brother-in-law
Ronald Deyell and his nephew John
Deyell.
