The Citizen, 2009-04-09, Page 191. Make sure all your cars are on
the same policy
Most insurance companies offer a
“Multi-vehicle discount” for
customers who insure more than one
car on the same policy.
2. Insure both your car and home
with the same company
Again, this may qualify you for a
discount called the “Multi-line
discount”. Most companies offer this
savings as an incentive to get your
home insurance business too.
3. Have an anti-theft device
installed in your car
If you take measures to ensure
your car is less likely to be stolen,
then some insurance companies will
offer an “Anti-theft discount” if
certain anti-theft devices are
installed.
4. Ask about other discounts you
might be able to get
Additional common discounts
include the age, low mileage,
occupational and auto club discounts
all of which could save you money,
if you qualify.
5. Increase your deductibles
The higher your deductibles, the
lower your insurance premium - so
raise them as much as you can. Keep
it affordable though, because this is
how much you’ll have to cover if
you need to submit a claim.
6. Drive carefully
Drivers with no accidents, tickets
or insurance claims almost always
pay less for their auto insurance
coverage. With a less than perfect
driving record, you can find yourself
paying much higher insurance
premiums over the years.
7. Don’t believe the myths about
auto insurance premiums.
Auto insurance premiums across
insurers are not the same. In fact,
each insurer’s car insurance rates are
so unique to them that it’s safe to say
that no two are alike.
8. Shop around
Get quotes instantly online. At
www.kanetix.ca, for example, you
can get online quotes from
competing insurers to see if you can
save money on your premiums.
9. Compare apples-to-apples while
shopping
When comparing rates, include the
same deductibles, coverages, and
limitations so you’re comparing like
rates. At comparison sites where you
can actually compare competing
rates side-by-side, they’ll do this for
you.
10. Never pay for a quote
When shopping around for auto
insurance you should never pay to
get a quote. Reputable quote
comparison services like
www.kanetix.ca do not charge you
to get quotes from competing
insurers and do not tack on fees to
the quotes you see.

How did we ever get along
without air conditioning in our cars?
It’s a feature we take for granted
until, suddenly, it’s blowing hot
air.
In the past few years, many
owners have discovered that fixing
an inoperative air conditioner can
cost a few hundred dollars or more,
depending upon the make and
model of vehicle.
The reason is that the old standby
R-12 refrigerant, trade named
DuPont Freon, has been replaced by
R-134a. Touted as being
environmentally safer than its
predecessor, R-134a has been
standard since ‘94.
If your older vehicle needs major
repairs to the air conditioning
system you can expect to replace
refrigerant and the oil in the
compressor in addition to the old
components.
You also may need to install a
retrofit conversion.
Do not allow anyone to mix
refrigerants. They’re not inter-
changeable. You cannot add R-134a
to your older air conditioner without
first flushing the system. Further,
according to Car Care Canada,
some substitutes are volatile
mixtures of propane, butane and
flammable hydrocarbons. Keep in
mind the fact that if your vehicle is
leaking refrigerant, you’re
damaging the ozone layer.
An annual inspection of the
vehicle, including the air
conditioning system, may help
forestall costly repairs. Many
automotive service shops offer AC
inspection specials when warm
weather arrives.
Otherwise, ask your service
centre to evaluate your system
before those hot and humid days of
summer.
