The Citizen, 2009-04-09, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2009. PAGE 9. By Makayla Tyerman The achievement program for the Grey 4-H Snickerdoodles was held at the Cranbrook Hall this past Sunday morning. All 17 members had to make a pie from scratch. The leaders welcomed everyone, then Yvonne Knight, guest judge, told members about the importance of judging and what things judges look for when judging pies. She thanked them for inviting her and told the members to keep doing 4-H because it’s a great program. President Sam Fretz presented her with a 4-H bag. The leaders called each member forward and presented them with a silicone baking mat for successfully completing the baking club. Afterwards they played a trivia game against the parents and guest. The questions all came from the project book or were talked about during meetings. Members and guests then got to enjoy the many different pies. The leaders talked about the next club that will be about etiquette. Sweet achievements It was a delicious finish to the Grey 4-H Snickerdoodles club with the achievement day on Saturday. Each of the members made a pie from scratch to be judged then later enjoyed by those in attendance. (Photo submitted) I am writing on a very blustery Monday morning and wondering why my school wasn’t cancelled. Those who headed out to work found the roads very slippery and snow covered and quite a few folks forgot their winter driving skills and found themselves in the ditch. I saw a few cars on my travels and heard of quite a few more over the radio that caused detours for the bus routes. Old Man Winter isn’t quite ready to pack it in for the year but hopefully this will be the final blow of this season. Congratulations to Brian and Sharon Pryce on the birth of anothergrandson. Proud parents of new sonBryce are Teresa Pryce and CodySimon. The Walton Hall was the place tobe for the P&H customer growermeeting on Thursday, April 2. Therewere nearly 40 area farmers on handto hear guest speakers Dale Cowan on soil testing, Jeff Burgsma on Pride Seeds and Steve Johns from Syngenta. The meeting started at 9:45 a.m. and was followed by a delicious roast beef dinner provided by the Walton Hall board. It was a real community effort to help at the meal. Hall board members Judy Lee and Judy Emmrich had the early shift for preparation. Then friends of the Hall, Mary Bernard and Kathleen Williamson had their shifts with member Jo-Ann McDonald dropping in to help for a while. Stopping by to help with dishes was another friend of the Hall, Heidi McClure. It is wonderful when so many folks do what they can to pull off a successful mel.The Cranbrook dart league hasfinished up its season with a greatturnout at its last couple of nights. On March 24, there were 16 playersout for fun at the boards, shooting forthat big score. In the end, high shotswent to Kathy Workman with 122and Brad Speiran with 133. The next week, April 1, all 22 players of the season arrived for a short night of darts and a longer night of socializing. The high shots of the night went to Teuni Smith and Brad Speiran both with a 112. They enjoyed a potluck lunch and everyone is looking forward to the summer weather. The newest players are looking forward to next winter’s season of darts already. Celebrating birthdays this past week were Peter Bennett, Mary McCall, Susan Watson, Krista Shortreed, Duncan Wey, Gary Bennett, Nate Fritz, David Baan, Colleen Bromley, Frank Burke, Donna Hannon, Stephen Gulutzen, Shelley McGavin, Doug J. Mitchell, Janet Mitchell, Wayne Regele, Ron Driscoll, Matthew Huether, George Love and Kevin Wilbee. By Jo-Ann McDonald It was a quiet week but a busy weekend at the Brussels Legion Branch. The Thursday night darts had 12 players. In the first-place team were Harry Smith, Jim Brown and Sandra Josling. Second place went to Kae Smith, Glen Zehr and Gord Jacklin. The high shot of the night was by Lawrence Machan hitting 112. The Friday night supper of roast pork was enjoyed by a crowd of nearly 50. The majority stayed to enjoy music. The trio of musicians are Don Chesher and wife Dale along with Ron Howatt. They played many of the old tunes that had folks singing quietly along. Don invited people to come up and sing, but no one was brave enough this time. The group has offered to play the first Friday night of the month for an hour or so and hopes people will come out and enjoy the music following supper. If you would like to join in playing, contact Don. It was a very enjoyable evening. There is no supper this Friday as it is Good Friday and the Branch will be closed. Saturday was very busy with both euchre and Huron County darts. There were 10 tables of euchre players hoping to have lucky cards but the luck was with Eileen Sellers and Marie Stewart who scored 86 points for the day and first prize. In second place team were Helen MacKenzie and Betty Hulley with 72 points and third prize went to Willis and Betty with 68 points. Having very little luck were Elizabeth and Ruth S. who won only 42 points for the day. The passes for another euchre were won by Bush Whittard and Helen W. for most lone hands. Euchre is every two weeks. It was busy upstairs at the Branch with the Huron County men’s dart league having their singles and doubles playoffs. There were about 45 men taking part and having a long but good day. The Sunday night dance attendance hit the 100 mark for the first time in 2009. The music was by the John Heaman Band, a very popular band with the crowd. Elections are on April 28. It would be nice to have some new folks take an interest in this exciting time for the Branch and to serve on the executive. Please contact the Branch if you feel you have some time to contribute and to learn more on how the Branch runs. Digging in Bernice Pierce was one of the many volunteers chipping in last week at the Blyth Legion’s daffodil lunch to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society. The lunch raised funds for the Cancer Society by selling daffodils as well as soup and sandwich lunches.
