HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-04-09, Page 2Kids Care founder Jacob McGavin
along with other members launched
their Spring Into Action campaign
last week at Brussels Public School.
While the presentation focused on
the group’s new initiative, both at the
school and in the community, there
was also a guest speaker from Free
The Children and a presentation of
$1,300 to the organization from Kids
Care.
Marieka Bergman travelled to
Brussels from Toronto to give a
presentation to Brussels Public
School students about Free The
Children. After the presentation, she
was presented with a cheque for
$1,300, raised for Kids Care by the
Brussels Optimists at the group’s
annual dinner and auction. The
money was raised from the profits
from the television draw, which was
over and above the night’s silent and
live auctions, which primarily raised
money for Multiple Sclerosis.
In December Bergman travelled to
Kenya. She showed the students
several pictures from the trip.
Included in those pictures were
images from the inside and outside
of a school in Kenya, which startled
many of the children due to the poor
conditions Third World country
children are forced to learn in.
McGavin then officially kicked off
the Spring Into Action campaign,
encouraging the students of Brussels
Public School to go out into the
community to get as many
“footprints” on this project as they
can.
Kids Care will be distributing
pages to each student at the school
with two footprints on it. These
footprints will be making the rounds
throughout the school and the
community, with each footprint
representing a promise to take one
small step to better the world.
Some suggestions as to what this
step might be, McGavin said, are to
make one small environmental
change to your home or business,
help a needy individual or
neighbour, help with a global or
social action campaign, simply
smiling at someone and passing it
along or basically any other actionthat helps your family, thecommunity or the world. In order to obtain a footprint, registration with Kids Care isnecessary, which will be available
from Brussels Public School or
eventually some participating local
businesses.
Registration with Kids Care is
available for $20 per business, $10
per family and $5 per individual.
The campaign will be running for
all of April and will conclude in
early May at Brussels Public School
to coincide with Education Week,
May 4-8.
Since its inception, Kids Care has
raised over $7,000 for Free The
Children and Brussels Public
School’s subsidiary Brick By Brick
campaign. In addition to the new
campaign, Kids Care is also selling
t-shirts made from natural,
sweatshop-free cotton.

PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2009.
Well darn, the white stuff is back.
The only good thing that I can see
about the blanket of white is that our
visitors hadn’t seen snow for awhile,
and very quickly had their cameras
at work.
The Watsons were celebrating on
Sunday. Queen Gene was 100 years
old and the day was marked in fine
style. Proper shawl and tiara
announced to the world that this was
one important lady.
Friends and family gathered to
share stories, laughs and food at
Braemar Retirement Centre in
Wingham.
Son Joe from Kitchener, Barry
from Tucson, Arizona and Bert from
Toronto welcomed many friends
from the past on behalf of their
brother Jim from Florida, and of
course mother Gene. Sister Alma
had the role of Duchess as only a
good sister could.
If you get to have 100 birthdays I
hope you have the personality and
disposition of Aunt Gene.
A sense of achievement and
accomplishment was in the air
on Sunday morning at the
United Church as new members took
their vows before family and
friends.
At Ethel United Brittany Keffer
renewed her baptismal vows to
become a member of the United
Church of Canada.
The newest members at Brussels
United offered the congregation
their promises as they shared with
Sandra Cable their talents in the
worship service depicting the events
of Palm Sunday and Holy
Week.
The communal promise included
Sandra, the parents and Kathy
Workman, clerk of session, laying
hands on the young people.
The promises were heard for Tori
Cardiff, Adam Cousins, Danielle
Ducharme, Dalton Hamilton, Lane
Sebastian, Ryan Sholdice and
Nathan Watson giving them
membership.
Congratulations and may they
grow in faith and love for God’s
world, keeping the promises they
made on Sunday.
I hope this white stuff is gone for
the good of the Easter Bunny.
Easter is such a nice season –
time for growth and green and
renewal.
Enjoy your time with family and
friends as you celebrate the roots of
the Christian faith, the very basis of
our life in Canada.
Easter Blessings to you and
yours!
