By Reba Jefferson
The first meeting of Wawanosh 4-
H, A Walk on the Wild Side, was on
Friday, March 27 at the Jefferson
house.
The meeting began with the junior
leaders organizing a game in which
the 25 members could learn each
other’s names. Next, leader Mary
Ellen Foran opened the meeting with
the pledge and introduced the other
leaders, Eileen George, Lorraine
McIlhargey and Marita Oudshoorn.
Roll call asked members what was
the highest point of land within 15
km. of the meeting location. Many
members did not know but some
good guesses were made.
The election of officers was held,
with Ellen Jefferson being elected as
president, Meagan Higgins as vice-
president, Jolande Oudshoorn as
secretary, and Reba Jefferson and
Kathleen Stennett sharing the job of
press reporter.
At the stretch break the junior
leaders led the members in a game
of Knights, Horses and Cavaliers.
Members had fun while playing and
were then ready to continue on with
more business.
Members then took turns reading
aloud about maps. They learned they
could find high points of land from
topographical maps and how to read
them.
The members cut up cones to
show how topographical maps
worked. As an introduction to
judging, members worked in groups
to judge hiking shoes.
Mary Ellen then talked to the
junior members of the requirements
of the club and Eileen spoke to the
senior members about their project.
Mary Ellen closed the meeting with
the motto and the club enjoyed
snacks.
The next meeting is on April 3 at
the Jeffersons’ for a hike.
