Locals will have some chances to hear local musician Lyndon John perform this spring as he prepares to take on Switzerland at the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in July. John, a reggae artist and 2008 Juno nominee, will perform July 10 and 11 at the Festival, which has featured such diverse talents as Ella Fitzgerald, Eric Clapton, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Deep Purple and Prince. John, who performed at Junofest as well as the Montreal and Calgary Reggae Festivals, and also shows around Ontario and Quebec, is excited by the opportunity to play in Switzerland. His wife, Julie, submitted a media kit, and organizers contacted him in March to offer a slot. But first, John, who resides in Brussels, will be in concert just a little closer to home, performing at Cinnamon Jim’s upper deck on April 24. The night will feature a dinner as well the show. Appearing with John will be Lorraine Reid of Toronto, an award- winning R&B singer, who has dueted with Cyndi Lauper and opened for Destiny’s Child and Coolio. “It should be a good night with a bit of everything when it comes music,” said Julie. “The first thing you will think when you meet Lorraine Reid is ... classy. After that you will be astounded by her voice and charisma.” Also, just a month before leaving for Switzerland, John and his band will provide the entertainment at the Brussels Lions elimination draw on June 6 at the arena. While being slated in at the Festival is exciting, Julie notes, “Lyndon loves performing for people close to home. He’s really looking forward to playing at these shows.” So where did you spend Earth Hour on Saturday evening? I hope it will remain a vivid memory for you as you go on with the rest of 2009. This hour was set as an example, a sample only of what you, as an individual can do to help the crisis we have with our energy consumption. At the 8:30 mark, lights went out and Ralph and I shared stories, lots of candles and food with Bella,Archie, Josh, Frank and Kathy. I think the stories got better as the candles dripped. Queen Victoria, I think was sleeping by 8:30 p.m. on Saturday as she had a very busy afternoon at the United Church greeting her royal subjects. She was so pleased that many attending her tea, came in appropriate attire, and if her mood continues Leona Armstrong and Bill Farnell may well be on her favourites list for their afternoon dress. Thanks to all who came, Chloe in her pink hat, dress and elegant gloves, the Jamestown duo who reminded us of the class system of old England and the Red Hat Ladies of Wingham who always enjoy good food and friends. You were all so beautiful – you too Sir John. The Harrison family were celebrating life on Sunday when they attended the United Church and the baptism of Kayden. Katie and Josh Wilson brought their beautiful boy to Brussels for us to admire and share the sacrament of baptism with family and friends. Papa John and Grandma Julie looked pretty pleased with life on Sunday. April has arrived and with it the coming of Easter. Churches in the village are setting up for Palm Sunday. To enhance that celebration the United folks are welcoming several young people on Sunday as they take their vows of fullmembership in the United Church ofCanada. Oh where do the years go?Starting on Monday,April 6, HolyWeek will be noted with noon hourservices that include lunch. For Monday, Tuesday andWednesday come to the UnitedChurch for the ecumenical time for sharing faith and fellowship as we approach the most significant time of the Christian year. Join us as we remember the events of Holy Week. I hope you were able to get at least one person with an April Fool’s trick, no matter how old it was. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Bonnie Gropp The Citizen By Jo-Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion began with the general meeting held on Tuesday evening, March 24. There were over 20 Comrades in attendance at the meeting. The committee chairmen gave their reports and new business was discussed. The members then discussed the barrier-free proposal that had been sent to the Comrades for their consideration. There were questions that John Rutledge answered to his ability. The question on funding of the proposal was also raised. The Branch intends on applying for all possible funding from all sources. The members voted to proceed. There is a protocol that must be followed and the next step is to gather all necessary information to be sent to Provincial Command. They must approve any building plan and evaluate the Branch’s financial stability. A financial committee was set with five Comrades volunteering for the committee. An exciting new fundraising idea was presented for the approval of the membership. Comrade Linda Bird is proposing an event calendar to be published for the year 2010. All service groups, churches, sports groups, community groups, agriculture groups, schools, etc. that have annual events or are planning an event for 2010 can advertise in the calendar for a small fee. The calendar will include all Brussels, Walton, Cranbrook, Ethel, Bluevale and Belgrave area events. If your group hasn’t been contacted At the Branch 20 attend meeting Continued on page 7
