various events every weekend.
Many Comrades will be called
upon to do some extra volunteer
work at the Branch, so I hope
Comrades have a few extra hours to
spend helping out.
Dinners, darts, euchres and fish
fries are all on the agenda.
The Cadets have been using the
Branch a lot this week with it being
March break. The regular meeting
of Cadets on Tuesday evening was
not held, but the drill team
practised during the day on
Tuesday and Thursday.
Detachment arrived on Friday
with all the necessary equipment
needed for their weekend activities.
Twenty-three Cadets gathered on
Saturday morning, prepared their
packs and then were off on a day’s
trek, cooking outdoors, learning
survival techniques and other
outdoor activities.
They went to the conservation
areas as well as to the Brussels
Public School.
They returned to the Branch in
the late afternoon, to a hot meal
prepared by some of the Cadet
leaders and helpers. They enjoyed
ham, roast beef and all the fixings
to fill them up for the evening. The
group then had entertainment to
enjoy, then a DJ played for the
dance.
The Cadets spent the night at the
Branch, along with nine chaperones
and in the morning enjoyed a
pancake and sausage breakfast.
The Corps then spent the rest of
their time outside doing a multitude
of activities in small groups.
Parents arrived to pick up the
Cadets around 2 p.m.
The Thursday night darts had 13
taking aim at the boards with new
players dropping by for a night of
fun.
The first-place team was Linda
Bird and Glen Zehr and the second-
place team was Roger McHardy
and Greta Zehr.
The high shot of the night was
Ken Bird, shooting a 114, and the
high start was by Sandra Josling
with a 65.
The Friday night supper was well
attended. The crowd enjoyed sweet
and sour meatballs. This week is
roast pork.
We have had the pleasure of
occasional music at the Friday
night suppers before and on April 3,
a trio have, the DoDaRons,
volunteered to provide some music.
We always welcome anyone who
would like to play, just let us know. The Saturday euchre had 10 1/2tables of players hoping to be luckyat cards. The first-place team was
Kathy Kennedy and Eileen Mann
with 73 points.
In second were Betty Hulley and
Bea Stoll with 69 points. Dorothy
Carter and Joann MacDonald
placed third with 68 points.
Having no luck with the cards
were Bush Whittard and Olave
Little with 45 points. Lone hand
prizes went to Willis Smith and
Ruth Sharpin.
Euchre is every two weeks.
There were four men off to play
provincial darts in Beechville on
the weekend. Taking part in the
competition were Cam Ross, Norm
Wylie, Bob Richardson and Ken
Bird. They had a good day but not
enough to be the winners.
The Branch voted to assist the
men with their expenses for the day
and the men have unanimously
agreed to return the stipend to the
Branch.
The spring zone convention was
held in Exeter on Sunday
afternoon. President Jo-Ann
McDonald was in attendance for
the Branch and Comrades John
Lowe and Eric Ross attended in
their roles for the Zone and District.
It was an interesting meeting with
a presentation by Kirk Scot, who, in
conjunction with the Huron County
Museum and Library, is
researching and videotaping
veterans and their stories in Huron
County.
It was also an election year, so
the new Zone Commander is Russ
Berry, Clinton and Deputy Zone
Commander is Andy Rodger ofWingham. The Sunday night dance was held at the Branch with over 85 attending. The new band,
Country Sounds, did a good job
playing a fine selection of dancing
music.
A reminder to the Branch
Comrades of the Honours and
Awards event being held on Sunday
at 2 p.m.
The special guest of the afternoon
is Tracy McLennan with her slide
presentation of her trip to Europe
and the military tour of the many
cemeteries and special places in
Holland and France and others.
After Huron County’s creative fall
workshops sold out and follow-up
sessions were requested, a series of
spring sessions have just been
added.
The first session is on April 2 in
Holmesville, followed by April 16 in
Goderich and then finally, May 6 at
the Blyth Festival Theatre.
Pre-registration for the sessions is
required at a cost of $50 for all three,
or $30 for the April 2 session and
$15 each for the April 16 and May 6
sessions.
The sessions, sponsored by the
Huron Small Business Enterprise
Centre and the Heritage and Cultural
Partnership, are open to everyone,
but are specifically designed with
the arts community in mind.
The April 2 session will include a
networking dinner and guest
speakers bringing information on
what is available locally to market
your particular product or service.
The session will have a real focus on
networking with other artists in the
community and will also include a
home-cooked meal from The White
Carnation.
The second session, in Goderich,
will discuss marketing options
online. There will be hints for
effective web design, linking to
other sites and optimizing web
traffic to your site. This workshop
will be taught by Jenna Ujiye from
Huron County and will look at a
variety of marketing options.
The third session will be run by
Eric Coates and will discuss setting
effective goals and balancing artistic
and business sides. There is an
optional dinner for $25 more as well
as a behind-the-scenes tour of the
theatre.
All three sessions will run from 7
p.m. to 9 p.m. and you are free to
bring along any promotional
materials or products to display.
