Digging in Eight ladies dug through their newly-purchased purses over the weekend at the Brussels Optimists auction, but only one (Jodi Semple, standing, third from left) discovered a new pair of earrings, valued at over $600. Thor Dintman of Stratford has been contracted to do the job by Huron East council in a motion that was approved at council’s March 17 meeting. Initially council was planning on looking into options for a design build for the library. However, after several attempts and coming up short, what councillors wanted in terms of design needed an architect in order to make it happen. Clerk-administrator Jack McLachlan said the cost to the municipality, $35,000, is relatively low compared to many established architects and since Dintman is new to the world of architecture, this may be the reason for the price cut. However, he said, and several councillors agreed, that a young architect, eager to make a name for himself, would put a lot of work into the project. Council passed the motion nearly unanimously, the only no being councillor Larry McGrath. Dintman will be contracted to design the new library, draft the tender documents, see the contract through construction and then have a construction review afterwards. Timeline has yet to be established as to when council expects design plans from Dintman. Huron East council picks architect for new library Gone! The Brussels Optimists stepped up to the plate over the weekend to combat multiple sclerosis with their live and silent auction. Auctioneering, left, was Kevin McArter and emceeing was Don Sholdice. The auction raised money for multiple sclerosis and the speakers included Brussels resident Jacob McGavin, who was recently named Junior Citizen of the Year and a founding member of Kids Care at Brussels Public School. The Optimists also raffled an LCD television, from which the benefits, in excess of $1,300, went towards McGavin’s organization. After several hours were dedicated to the municipal budget at council’s March 17 meeting, councillors opted to delay going through the grant applications line- by-line. The money, however, has been set aside to cover the grants (and nearly $3,000 more) while at the same time, giving local groups several more days to send in a request if they haven’t already. Requests have already been submitted by the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair, the Brussels Agricultural Fall Fair, the Brussels Horticultural Society and the Brussels Santa Claus Parade as well as the Ethel Minor Softball Association. The 23 grants total $17,233.00 with the largest request being from the Seaforth Lions Club, being for the pool, in the amount of $6,500. Huron East budgets for grants
