A week ago Monday, the Brussels
Atom Local League travelled to
Listowel to play.
Listowel scored two quick goals
right off the start to take the lead. It
wasn’t until midway through the
period when Kiaran Jared made a
successful pass to Derrick Waechter
to make it 2-1 for Listowel.
The second period saw lots of play
at both ends, with numerous shots
and just as many remarkable saves.
With three minutes left on the clock,
Listowel scored their third. Eleven
seconds later, Cody Harding netted
the second for Brussels, assisted by
Ben Newell.
With the clock ticking down,
Newell took a shot and tied the
game. Two and a half minutes later,
Dalen Martin scored assisted by
Chris Van Veen. Brussels skated
away with a 4-3 win.
The next game in the round-robin
series saw them face off against
Minto.
There was no score in the first
period. The second period saw
Daniel Fritz get one in, assisted by
Martin. Brussels was unable to hold
the lead, however and lost 2-1.
Saturday night saw Brussels travel
to Zurich for an 8 p.m. game. Zurich
was quick to light up the scoreboard
and take the lead.
It wasn’t until halfway through the
second period when Jared got one
past their goalie. He was assisted by
Harding and Waechter.
A shift change gave Kailey
Wheeler the opportunity to break the
tie and take a 2-1 lead. She was
assisted by Martin. With just a
minute left on the clock in the
second, Jared scored on a
breakaway.
The third period saw no one able
to score, despite several changes
from both sides. Brussels skated
away with the 3-1 win.
Solid in net was Konrad
McArter.
The score for Brussels in this
round robin is six wins and two
losses. Two games are left to decide
who will move on to the local league
finals.
The Blyth Novice Reps took onBrussels in game five of their playoffseries last Thursday night. The first two games were splitbetween the teams. Game three wastaken by the Brussels team with a
final score of 3-1. Blyth’s only goal
came late in the second period when
Parker Gibbings scored unassisted.
The Blyth squad tried to make it
close but couldn’t beat the Brussels
goalie again.
Friday night the Blyth team
headed over to Brussels in a do-or-
be-done game four. After Brussels
scored in the first, and a few missed
chances on Blyth’s part, Blyth’s,
Jared Shearer, knocked one past the
goaltender with help from Ethan
Coultes and Bailey Bos in thesecond. The game was tied heading to thethird. Gibbings carried the puck infrom the blue line, and the reboundwas buried in the net by Carson
Richmond to take the lead.
The Blyth team kept the pressure
on with Damon Allen firing one
home, with assists going to Gibbings
and Mitch McNichol. Richmond
scored another to seal the win.
Both teams’ goalies need to be
credited with keeping their teams in
the games.
With the win a game five matchup
was set for Sunday afternoon.
Both teams came to play and
wanted to continue their season.
End-to-end action saw a great gamedevelop.Shearer started the scoring action, unassisted, at the end of the first.Blyth added three more in second, with goals from Allen, Coultes, and
Gibbings to take a four-goal lead.
Assists were credited to Michaela
Rodger with two, Bos and Gibbings.
The Brussels team charged back
with three of their own to get back in
the game at 4-3. The third period
was tense for both teams, and some
chances at both ends of the ice were
turned away by the goalies.
Finally, with 39 seconds to go,
Blyth’s Drew VanWyk sealed the
victory with the final goal of the
game.

The men’s C final was up for grabs last weekend at Blyth’s
hockey tournament where Auburn took on the Goderich
