The Brussels Atom Reps played
against Goderich AE Wednesday
night, March 11.
No one was able to score until
midway through the second period.
Wyatt Machan lifted the first goal in,
top shelf, assisted by Austin
Johnston and Delayna Smith.
In the third period, Smith scored
unassisted to take a 2-0 lead.
With only 2:47 left, Goderich AE
netted their first. By pulling their
goalie, Goderich was able to tie up
the game with just 0:17 left on the
clock.
Sudden death overtime saw
Machan score the winning goal,
assisted by Johnston and Nic Zwep.
Saturday in Goderich, Brussels
was down 2-0 by the end of the first
period.
In the second period after the
Goderich goalie stopped a shot,
Logan Kellington won the face-off.
He passed the puck over to Dawson
Peachey, who took a shot. It
rebounded out and Kellington tipped
it in. Back at centre ice, Kellington
again had the face-off. He and
Peachey worked together to again
net the goal, tying up the game at 2-
2. Machan assisted by Johnston,
gave his team a 3-2 lead.
In the third period Kellington
netted his hattrick right from the
face-off. With 0:56 left on the clock,
and Goderich without a goalie,
Kellington, assisted by Peachey,
scored on the empty net for Brussels
to win the second game of the series,
5-2.
Sunday, game three, the squad was
looking for the sweep.
It was midway through the second
period before Machan, assisted by
Johnston, was able to break the
twine and score to take the lead.
Goderich fought back and the
second period ended in a 1-1 tie.
Peachey and Kellington worked
together to break it, then Smith
scored the third goal for Brussels,
assisted by Johnston and Machan.
Smith also netted the fourth and
final goal for Brussels. This time she
was assisted by Zwep and Peachey.
Brussels held the lead to win 4-1
and would move on to play
Lucknow.
Goalie Derrick Waechter was solid
in net all three games allowing only
five goals in total.
Game one against Lucknow was
an entirely different story for
Brussels as they lost 9-1. Scoring the
lone goal for Brussels was
Kellington, assisted by Machan and
Dylan McNeil.
Game two was better. Despite a
10-minute sudden death overtime,
the game was left at a tie of 2-2.
Scoring for Brussels were Connor
Bridge and Machan.
In game three Kellington scored
with a pass from Machan for
Brussels to take a 1-0 lead in the first
period.
Lucknow tied it halfway through
the second period.
Brussels pulled ahead with a shot
from Kellington from the blue line.
Minutes later, Peachey backhanded
in the third goal, assisted by Zwep.
Lucknow was unable to get any
more goals past Waechter so
Brussels skated off with a hard
fought 3-1 win.
Game four was played this past
Tuesday night.
The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls
travelled to Goderich over the first
weekend of March break for the
60th annual Lions Young Canada
PeeWee Tournament. Fans were
treated to five great games of
hockey.
In game one they played Seaforth.
The girls got off to a great start in
this game on goals by Mackenzie
Nesbitt and Jordyn Sholdice.
That score held until the third
period when Seaforth got on the
board. The team played a
considerable amount of that third
period in their own end of the ice,
but managed to hang on for the 2-1
win.
Game two was against
Chatsworth. The team built a 3-0
lead in the first, then traded goals for
the rest of the game. The final score
was 6-3 for the Blyth-Brussels
squad.
Goal scorers were Sholdice and
Ashley Higgins and Lexi Smith and
Taylor Higgins scoring two each.
Game three put the team against
Mount Forest. They knew this was a
very strong opponent with excellent
defensive play.
Sholdice scored 28 seconds into
the game and added another minutes
later on a powerful shot into the top
of the net.
Mount Forest scored in the final
seconds of the first and tied the game
midway through the second period.
With 13 seconds remaining in the
second, Sholdice completed the
natural hattrick.
The girls held the lead until late in
the third when Mount Forest scored
on the power play with four minutes
to go. Two minutes later, a deflected
shot resulted in Mount Forest’s first
lead of the game. The final score was
a loss of 4-3.
Game four was the semi-final
versus Markdale. This proved to be a
very tight-checking game.
Smith got the team on the board in
the first period. That lead stood into
the intermission after two periods.
Markdale evened the score in the
first minute of the third. Neither
team could get the second goal so a
five-minute overtime followed with
no winner.
Lindsay Shiell provided great
goaltending in this game to get the
team through the third period and
overtime.
The game was settled by a
shootout. It lasted one shooter each
with Markdale scoring to advance to
the final.
Game five was the consolation
versus the host Goderich Sailorettes.
For the fifth straight time, the girls
opened the scoring in the first
period. Sholdice got the tally.
Jessica Hastie replied for
Goderich late in the first and to open
the second period to grab the 2-1
lead.
However 39 seconds later Smith
scored on a nifty backhand over the
sprawling Goderich goalie. Smith
added another with four minutes to
go in the second. The third period
provided tremendous action at both
ends of the ice. Blyth-Brussels was
unable to get the insurance marker
and Goderich was unable to get the
equalizer despite numerous chances
for both to happen. Blyth-Brussels
was the consolation winner by a
score of 3-2.
